Disney and Virgil Abloh Securities unveil a one-of-a-kind sculpture of Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey to mark Disney’s 100th anniversary and launch a creative celebration that brings together some of the world’s most inventive minds including Beyoncé, Christian Louboutin and Lang Lang

South Africa, July 28, 2023 – Today marks the launch of Create 100, a global celebration of creativity marking 100 years of Disney storytelling. Some of the world’s most renowned visionaries and next generation talent across fashion, music, art and more have donated artworks, items and experiences inspired by their personal connection to stories and characters across Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and 20th Century, to benefit Make-A-Wish®. To begin, Disney is commemorating the launch with a $1 million donation to Make-A-Wish to support the granting of life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

The unveiling of The Structural Sorcerer – a Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey Sculpture, inspired by original artwork by Virgil Abloh, brought to life by Virgil Abloh Securities’ design firm, ALASKA ALASKA, at the Royal College of Art in Battersea, London for Disney’s Create 100. To mark its 100th anniversary, Disney has invited creative visionaries and next generation talent to donate artworks and experiences for the Create 100 initiative, each inspired by their personal connection to Disney stories and characters. “Disney’s timeless stories and characters have made an indelible mark on pop culture around the globe, transcending borders, industries and generations,” said Consumer Products, Games and Publishing President Tasia Filippatos. “We couldn’t think of a better way to honor 100 years of Disney storytelling than by collaborating with this outstanding collective of visionaries in support of Make-A-Wish.”

To kick off the campaign, Disney worked with Virgil Abloh Securities to reveal a 6-foot structural sculpture of Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey from Disney’s Fantasia at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London. The life-size piecetitled‘Structural Sorcerer — a Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey Sculpture’ was commissioned by Disney and designed by ALASKA ALASKA. “Paying homage to the everlasting legacy of Virgil Abloh, the Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey sculpture takes inspiration from his work on the grid furniture series and the Mickey Mouse illustration he created in 2018 in celebration of Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday,” said the late artist’s wife, Shannon Abloh.

In line with Create 100’s goal to inspire and champion next generation talent, the ‘Structural Sorcerer —Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey Sculpture’ will be on display at the RCA over the summer. Virgil Abloh had a close relationship with the RCA, which recently announced a scholarship in his name to support talented but financially restricted Black British students. In a continued effort to amplify the next generation of creators, Virgil Abloh Securities also enlisted multidisciplinary artist Favour Jonathan, who created a sculpture of Dr. Facilier from Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, to be part of Create 100.

Additional incredible artworks, items and experiences, together with the stories behind them, will be revealed over the summer. The Create 100 contributions feature everything from musical elements to comic books to recreations of iconic movie props and more from renowned talent such as global icon Beyoncé, famed French fashion designer Christian Louboutin, Italian Global Creative Director for Swarovski Giovanna Engelbert, Chinese virtuoso pianist Lang Lang, American fashion pioneer Tommy Hilfiger and celebrated Brazilian artist Vik Muniz. Global partners such as adidas, Pandora and Coach will also be contributing one-of-a-kind pieces to the celebration.

“Wishes are generated by the imagination of our wish children and that creative spark inspires their journey with us,” said Luciano Manzo, President and CEO, Make-A-Wish International. “Create 100 showcases the power of creativity to bring hope. This inspirational initiative will help grant life-changing wishes for children around the world who are living with critical illnesses. We are so grateful to Disney and all the artists involved for their support.”

For more than 40 years, Disney and Make-A-Wish have granted wishes together for more than 150,000 children with critical illnesses worldwide. The life-changing wishes include shopping sprees, studio visits, theme park and resort vacations, cruises, talent meet-and-greets, sports-themed experiences and more. Many Disney cast members are also wish-granting volunteers, parents of wish children or wish alumni themselves.

From 16 May 2023, fans are able to purchase specially branded wristbands from www.ncpd.org.za for R30.00 each.

On Youth Day, 16 June 2023, those who have purchased the wristbands are invited to wear them, showing their support and celebration of inclusion and equity for children and young persons with disabilities. Schools in particular are invited to show their support with learners encouraged to wear their wristbands on 15 June 2023, with a chance to win prizes for both the schools and individual learners. Wristbands will be available to purchase throughout the remainder of 2023.

Participants are welcome to share their support on social media by using the hashtag #NCPDHeroesUnite #Marvel and tagging @vavaiyouth on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. It is through these channels that you can enter the photo competition with fabulous prizes to be won.

Driven by the youth-focused project of the NCPD, Vava iYouth, the campaign seeks to further build on the long-term objective of facilitating full economic and social participation, rights and enjoyment for youth with disabilities. Funds raised from the campaign will go towards funding, education and training, as well as seeking opportunities for self-representation for this sector of the population. Ultimately, the long-term goal is ensuring that youth people with disabilities have equal access to resources and opportunities, leading to meaningful and fulfilling participation in society.

“Marvel Super Heroes showcase attributes such as heroism, relatability and community, with an openness in an interconnected world,” says Luke Roberts, General Manager, Consumer Products, Games and Publishing, The Walt Disney Company Africa Consumer. “We are excited to lend our support to the NCPD, after two successful collaborations under the Disney Princess banners, and bring this powerful campaign to life, all in an effort to showcase and celebrate young South Africans with disabilities.”

“The Heroes United campaign is a reminder that when we join in unity we can achieve great things and make the world a better place for everyone. It demonstrates that age, gender, race or ability do not have to be barriers to working together towards a common goal. Indeed, real life heroes do exist, they are ordinary people who show kindness and who are not afraid to advocate for social justice. So, let’s stand hand-in-hand and work to create an inclusive society that values and celebrates diversity.” Ado Bakasa, NCPD Coordinator Youth Affairs: Vava iYouth.

Inspired by the diverse, heroic, inspirational Marvel Super Heroes, the campaign seeks to show that the attributes that make the characters who they are – strength, endurance, kindness, courage, etc. – are found in all of us. In addition, it is when our characters unite that they are able to overcome all obstacles. Retailers are currently celebrating Marvel Heroes Unite across the country.

Marvel Heroes Unite wristbands are available online at https://ncpd.org.za for R30 and bulk orders are available to organisations and schools who would like to support. All funds will go directly to the NCPD.

Self-expression is the way of showing who you are to the world, and it’s important to celebrate that uniqueness. When you express yourself, you show the world what you’re passionate about, what you stand for, and what you believe in. This can help you connect with others who share similar interests and values, and it can also help you feel more confident and empowered.

However, self-expression can sometimes be difficult, especially for teens who are dealing with a variety of challenges. Some of the most common issues that teens face are:

  1. Bullying: Many teens experience bullying, either in person or online. This can make them feel isolated and alone, and it can also damage their self-esteem.
  2. Body image: Teens are often self-conscious about their appearance, and this can lead to negative feelings about themselves.
  3. Academic pressure: Teens are under a lot of pressure to perform well academically, which can be stressful and overwhelming.
  4. Family problems: Many teens come from families that are struggling with issues such as divorce, substance abuse, or financial problems.
  5. Mental health issues: Depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues can be especially difficult for teens, who may not know how to cope with these feelings.

Unfortunately, some teens may feel so overwhelmed by these challenges that they consider suicide. It’s important to recognize the warning signs of suicide, such as talking about suicide, withdrawing from friends and family, and giving away possessions. If you or someone you know is experiencing these warning signs, it’s important to seek help immediately.

One way to prevent suicide is to encourage self-expression. When teens feel free to express themselves, they are less likely to feel isolated and alone. Here are some ways to encourage self-expression:

  1. Encourage creative expression: Whether it’s through art, music, or writing, creative expression can be a powerful way to express emotions and connect with others.
  2. Listen actively: When teens feel heard and understood, they are more likely to open up and express themselves.
  3. Provide a safe space: Teens need a safe and supportive environment where they can be themselves without fear of judgment or ridicule.
  4. Celebrate uniqueness: Encourage teens to embrace their individuality and celebrate what makes them unique.

As kids grow older, exposing them to inclusive content and products like Monster High enables them to recognise that each of us is unique, and learn to embrace what makes them special. Dealing with self-esteem or mental health is always a challenge, but cultivating an inclusive system of engagement and play is one way to create a more supportive and accepting world.

Toy manufacturing giant, Mattel, has announced the launch of its latest creation: My First Barbie. Since 1959, Barbie has been inspiring children with toys that encourage imagination, expression and discovery through play and this year’s line is no exception. This year, Barbie is introducing a brand-new innovation in the dolls category that will change how preschool aged children play and interact with Barbie as a character. My First Barbie, the first-ever Barbie doll specifically designed for preschool-aged children.

The My First Barbie doll features the same look and feel that Barbie fans know and love but is updated with large accessories, easy-to-dress Velcro fashions and a larger, soft doll body made for smaller hands and growing imaginations. The My First Barbie line includes easy-to-play accessories such as fashion packs, pets, bedroom playset and a teatime playset, all made for younger fans to expand storytelling themes young kids love.

The doll that boasts an array of unique features which make it perfect for little hands. My First Barbie doll is larger than a standard Barbie doll, standing at 34,29 CM compared to the standard 29,21 CM. From its soft and huggable body to its large, easy-to-style hair, My First Barbie is built for the perfect playtime experience. Mattel recognises that young children need toys that are easy to handle and safe for them. That’s why My First Barbie is made with non-toxic materials that have been tested and approved for children aged three years and above. This means that parents can rest assured that their child is safe while they play with My First Barbie. But My First Barbie is not only safe for children to play with, but it also offers many unique benefits.

For starters, My First Barbie promotes imaginative play and creativity. Children can create their own storylines and scenarios, and the doll’s versatile hair allows them to try out different hairstyles. This helps develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. My First Barbie’s colourful outfit also provides visual stimulation and encourages children to explore different colours and patterns. My First Barbie’s smaller size is perfect for little hands and makes it easy for children to carry her around wherever they go.

The Mattel Global Consumer Insights team conducted an exploration on what parents look for in a doll for their preschool-aged children. The research showed that while many parents want to buy Barbie dolls for their preschool-aged daughters, some feel like their daughters aren’t old enough to play with the standard sized Barbie doll given their currently dexterity. Preschool-aged kids want to brush hair, change outfits, and tell stories but may require help from an adult with the traditional Barbie scale.

In fact, nearly 60% of parents who had not yet purchased Barbie dolls for their 3-year-old daughters cited concerns with dexterity.* Based on description alone of the My First Barbie doll, 94% of parents were interested in purchasing the doll for their daughter.*

Parents also indicated that they are likely to choose a toy for their daughter based on a favorite character, and this ‘favorite’ status is often driven by content exposure. This finding led to the creation of My First Barbie YouTube content, the first Barbie animated special designed for preschoolers. Inviting younger kids to ‘meet’ Barbie and be introduced to her inspiring world.

In addition to its unique features, My First Barbie also has an affordable price point, making it a great option for parents who want to introduce their child to the wonderful world of Barbie without breaking the bank. This new doll is sure to bring joy and delight to any child’s playtime, while also providing a safe and educational experience. You will see the smile on your child’s face grow as they begin their journey into imaginative play!

Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) announced today that Barbie is celebrating International Women’s Day by honouring over half a dozen women worldwide who are leaders in STEM with one-of-a-kind role model dolls made in their likeness. Barbie knows that seeing is believing – and access to successful female role models in STEM is essential for children to build and maintain an interest in the industry.

Women make up less than one-third of the STEM workforce,* and it’s proven that girls are systemically tracked away from STEM throughout their education.** To show girls that they can be anything, Barbie is proud to continue its commitment to recognizing female role models and highlighting careers which are historically underrepresented by women.

“Barbie is dedicated to showcasing women who are role models from all backgrounds, professions, and nationalities so that girls around the world can see themselves in careers that might not always seem as accessible,” said Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie & Dolls, Mattel. “STEM is a field where women are severely underrepresented, and our hope is that honouring these seven leaders in science and technology will encourage girls to follow their passion in this field. This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to continue our work in closing the Dream Gap and reminding girls of their limitless potential.”

The Barbie brand’s lineup of global female role models includes three exceptional sisters from the United States – Susan, Anne, and Janet Wojcicki – who can serve as inspiration in a variety of STEM fields for the next generation of women leaders. The full global lineup being honoured with one-of-a-kind Barbie dolls made in their likeness includes:

  • Susan Wojcicki (United States): Longtime YouTube CEO
  • Anne Wojcicki (United States): Co-Founder and CEO of 23andME
  • Janet Wojcicki (United States):  Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology at the University of California, San Francisco
  • Katya Echazarreta (Mexico): Electrical Engineer and Science Show Host
  • Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock (United Kingdom): Space Scientist and Science Educator
  • Prof Dr Antje Boetius (DE): Marine Researcher and Microbiologist
  • Yinuo Li (China): Co-Founder of ETU Education

“It feels surreal that my family’s stories might interest and impact the lives of girls worldwide. My sisters were some of my strongest role models growing up and we all built careers based on our interest in STEM. Our parents fostered independence and a belief that we could truly be anything we wanted to be when I grew up, but most important was to pursue a passion,” said Anne Wojcicki, Co-Founder and CEO of 23andME. “I’m honoured to celebrate International Women’s Day this year with Barbie alongside my family and these other powerful women in STEM leadership roles. I hope that sharing our stories encourages young girls to try something new, face something that may scare them, and look at challenges as exciting opportunities.”

“I understand first-hand that role models are essential for young girls to see what’s possible. When I was starting my career, I struggled to find inspiring stories of other women excelling in STEM – and especially in epidemiology,” said Janet Wojcicki, Professor of Paediatrics and Epidemiology, UCSF. “I have been impressed with the increasing global relevance of Barbies for girls from all communities and seen first-hand through my work the relevance of Barbie for sub-Saharan African and Latinx girls. I’m honoured to serve as a Barbie role model this year and help children worldwide see women in places that they might want to be in one day.”

“Growing up, I didn’t imagine that I would have a career in tech,” said Susan Wojcicki, Longtime YouTube CEO. “My sisters and I found jobs we love and discovered how creative and fulfilling careers in STEM can be for women. I spent nearly 25 years working at Google and nine years as the CEO of YouTube, and it was an incredible experience.
