When a toy is so happy that it can even brighten up your day – then it must be the happiest toy in the world!

We have tried and tested these toys as part of a campaign, but the opinion expressed is unbiased… When you watch the videos you will know just how much fun these toys are.

Little Tikes Squishy Octopus Piano

The Little Tikes Squishy Octopus Piano is literally the best musical toy we have ever seen and owned. If this Octopus was available when I bought baby toys, it most probably would’ve made the cut and this is why…

When you see it, it will make you smile 🙂
  • 2 music settings of which one plays a melody for each key vs standard single notes
  • A soft tongue button that releases the happiest sounds we’ve ever heard (check out the video)
  • It is durable, our toddler stands on it all the time
  • It has sound, lights and texture with the additional sensory beads on the keys
  • It is compact enough to fit in my handbag or in baby’s bag to take everywhere
  • Very importantly it has no sharp edges

All the humans in the house wants to play with the Octopus Piano, because it just makes you happy. We have taken it on a road trip and I haven’t gotten tired of listening to it either.

Little Tikes Ocean Explorer – Ball Chase Octopus

I know this toy has the words “ball chase” but unfortunately in my house it’s more like “who can hit mommy with the balls”. This is the most fun for my toddler, unfortunately baby just tries to eat the balls – she even crawls to get her little hands on them.

We seem to have misplaced some of the balls around the house between the kids, the cats and the nanny, but that’s not a problem. I bought 6 table tennis balls and they fit too.

Did you know that Little Tikes has brought smiles for 50 years already?

Known for its colourful, resilient, fun and educational toys, Little Tikes continues to bring exciting new products to an already well-established and much-loved range.

For 50 years Little Tikes has brought smiles and happiness to children all over the world. The toys incorporate fun, education, gross and fine motor skills development, ingenuity and of course fun. The products are made especially for little hands and are built to last. Kids can throw them, bite them and really get stuck in with hands-on play. The toys are a firm favourite amongst kids in South Africa and no doubt will be enjoyed for generations to come.

Chiquita Patrizi of Prima Toys

Little Tikes encourages play – obviously!

A 2018 policy report from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests parents should pencil in big blocks of time devoted to nothing but free play.  One reason for the suggestion is that a high percentage of children in the U.S. no longer have break during their day at pre-school because of increased academic pressure. While this is fortunately not the case in South African pre-schools, time for free play is diminishing and parents should take heed before it becomes a “playtime crisis”.

As a response to this, Little Tikes and Prima Toys aim to celebrate the important relationship between parent and child and encourages parents and kids to be active and playful through discovery… together!  The Little Tikes product range is designed for all sorts of play patterns and lays the foundation not only for the healthy development of a child, but for the future of play.

Below are some of the best-selling toys from Little Tikes:

Little Tikes Push n Play Turtle

The Little Tikes Push n Play Turtle is a walker and activity centre in one.  Ideal for ages 9 months plus, the sturdy handle allows toddlers to hold on and walk with confidence. To prevent walker from going too fast, the wheels have a locking mechanism. The toy also features a shape sorting activity that helps develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. The ball popper allows children to hear and see the shapes pop while the walker is in motion. Clicking toys on the handle make walking fun! RSP: R699.99

Little Tikes Sing n Roll Ducky

The Sing n Roll Ducky is a pull along toy that also features sounds and songs. The toy helps to develop fine motor skills and audio recognition. Ideal for ages 12+ months. RSP: R299.99

Lexa is already displaying the signs of the terrible-two’s even if her second birthday is only in October. Some days it feels like I just want to hide in my bedroom/in a cupboard/somewhere and not have to play and keep her busy… especially on weekends!

…but to get back to what should be on your shopping list for toddlers this Christmas!

Prima Toys’ theme for 2018 is Let them explore. It’s about letting children enjoy and explore their world through play. It’s about giving them the opportunity to discover new things, new play patterns, new technology and more.

LeapFrog

I think LeapFrog is one of my personal favourites to buy for Lexa. It is fun, interactive and will prepare her for a lifetime of learning. Lexa loves her Chat & Count, she uses it as a cellphone and it keeps her busy to/from our drive to her school.

A range of new LeapFrog products are available to help your child develop a love of learning during the early childhood year. They are:

  • LeapFrog Shapes and Sharing Picnic Basket
  • Rainbow lights Ladybird
  • Colour Mixer Truck
  • Sort & Spin Turtle
  • Hug & Learn Bears Book
  • Number Crunching Squirrel
  • Dino’s Delightful Day
  • Letterband Phonics Jam
  • Water & Grow Garden
  • Sweet treats Learning café
  • Leapfrog Mr Pencil’s Alphabet Bag
  • Leapfrog Scout’s Get Up & Go Activity
  • Leapfrog Scoop & Learn Ice Cream Cart

The Leapfrog Scoop & Learn Ice Cream Cart was a big hit at the event. When you choose a scoop of ice cream it verbalises what you are doing ‘1 scoop of yellow ice cream’… it even counts the pumps of topping and tells you if you add red cherries.

Little Tikes

Little Tikes is also one of those brands that stand out when it comes to developing children’s minds and imagination. The toys encourage discovery and learning through active, creative and social play and provide hours of fun.

Plus Little Tikes toys have been designed especially for little hands and are tough enough to endure being chewed, hit and thrown about – just ask my forehead and Lexa’s throwing arm!

Little Tikes Toys for Toddlers

Below are some of the latest toys from Little Tikes:

  • Little Tikes Singing Sorter
  • Little Tikes Squishy Piano
  • Little Tikes Touch n Go Flyers

Peppa Pig

I’m not fond of pigs, but this cutie pink pig who lives with her little brother George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig is such a fun character for kids. So it is no surprise that the new Peppa Pig range of toys are set to become an essential part of the toy box!

The latest Peppa Pig range has an array of fun playsets and characters for pre-schoolers to play with. From the Ice Cream Van and Peppa Jet to plush toys.

V Tech

I played with the little car set at the Prima Toys event and it was so much fun!

VTech creates age appropriate and developmental stage-based electronic learning products for children of various ages. VTech consults a panel of experts, specialised in reading, language arts, science, math and child development, during the process of creating new products to ensure that they are beneficial to children.

One of the key toy lines from VTech this year is the Toot-Toot Drivers range. The playsets provide miles of learning fun. Each playset comes with different track shapes so that toddlers can use their creativity and reconfigure the set or connect to other Toot-Toot Drivers playsets.  A wonderful feature of the toys is that each playset is equipped with SmartPoint technology. SmartPoint locations recognise and respond to SmartPoint vehicles with sound effects. This added element keeps little ones engaged by boosting imaginative play and teaches cause and effect.

Some of the new products for toddlers that parents can look forward to from VTech are:

  • Secret Safe Mini Diary
  • Sing Along microphone
  • Toot Drivers – below are sets designed for Toot drivers vehicles
  • Deluxe Track Set
  • Airport
  • Fire Station
  • Garage
  • Light & Flight Discovery Globe
  • Kidi Superstar Move

VTEC

My personal favourite from this range… the VTech Light & Glight Discovery Globe! I love to travel and made sure that Lexa had her first international passport stamp before she was 2.VTEC Globe

“Developmental Toys” is the latest buzz-word in terms of parenting – and for good reason.

Prima Baby is proud to announce a brand new range of baby toys – Little Tikes, who is making products for the littlest ones in your household with the newest range, Little Tikes Baby.

We know moms are hyper-focused on their child’s development from week to week, but we also know that it can be incredibly difficult to find toys that can actually aid in developmental play.

Each “Designed to Develop” product helps baby achieve a primary developmental milestone.  Little Tikes Baby has partnered closely with child development experts to ensure each product delivers on its promise.

There are three different segments within the line — soothe, stimulate, and strengthen — each honing in on what is most important to moms and babies in the first six months:

  • The ‘soothe’ segment features products designed to help calm and nurture baby.
  • The ‘stimulate’ segment highlights items designed to awaken baby’s senses through sight, touch, and sound.
  • The ‘strengthen’ segment is all about products designed to build baby’s strength during tummy time.

Nothing can replace quality playtime with your baby.  We’re proud that Little Tikes Baby products can be a helpful part of those special moments!

All products are available at Hamleys Baby Divisions (Eastgate, Sandton, Menlyn, Mall Of Africa, V&A Waterfront and Greenstone.), Selected Kids Emporium stores, www.takealot.com , www.loot.co.za , www.netbaby.co.za , www.simplicity.co.za and www.thebabyzone.co.za.

I have noticed one thing with the kid, you can buy her the most expensive toy, but what she actually wants (right now) is something she can bash around or press buttons – and chew everything.

She has gone through stages where rattles were her thing (she still hangs onto one) and she would crawl towards any noise; Soft toys she’s only recently shown some interest in – but she always liked to kick them around; In the car and cot we always throw a few tactile toys that might interest her – and she is mastering the toys that require her to pull a worm out of a fruit so it can shake itself back in;

Starting to sound like a broken record, but Prima Baby is starting to bring in some exciting new toys that you should be on the lookout for.

The octopus would be a winner when we have to change her – that seems to be the time she needs something to keep her busy and a soft toy with lots of “flanges” is perfect.

I’m hoping to do some more research on car seats for little miss as we have reached that stage… It’s a safety, longevity and price issue 🙂

It is no secret that I love toys just as much as a kid would. Now that we have little Miss Lexa, I want to/but don’t want to share my toys with her.

She has always been a mobile baby. From day one she would move around the cot like Speedy Conzales. No toy has ever been safe, if she could see it, she got to it.

There are toys that we gave to her way before we should’ve but we wanted to make sure she was challenged. One such toy is the Little Tikes Light & Sound Spinning Top

It is important to give your child age appropriate toys. Babies get frustrated if they don’t know how use a toy – but it is also a good idea to challenge them.

This toy we introduced Lexa to at 4 months. I went in with sounds, lights and spinning balls but this proved to be a bit loud for her. We then took out the batteries and then she got interested… She tried to mimic and push the top down, but only now at 7 months did she master that.

Back in 2015, way before there was even hope of a baby we got the musical Hello Kitty face. We first introduced her to it at around 3 months and she quickly realised if she swipes across it, it plays sounds. She now deliberately bashes the Hello Kitty, but she hasn’t mastered pressing single buttons. She however studies my movements on the piano intently.

Prima Toys doesn’t carry this particular model anymore, but they have very cute substitutes:

  1. Little Tikes Tap ‘n Tune Piano
  2. LeapFrog Learn & Groove Musical Table

When Lexa started crawling and I wanted her to follow me I drag this little Hello Kitty walker behind me. The sound and colours attracted and held her attention. Now she likes to hold the cat and bash I think on the floor. I’m sure she will love using it when she walks!

Once again, this is a 2015 toy, so it isn’t available anymore. However, Prima Toys have brought in something even better…

Hubby and I have been looking around at these first step walkers, but with everything going on with his family we have barely been home. We are looking at the First Steps Baby Walker – it has so many things that’ll keep her busy plus then we can ditch the walking ring.

Then the best thing ever when you have older cousins… you get their toys and dolls. Somebody will be getting a BIG BUNCH of Bratz dolls. I will be restoring them – fixing their hair and get some new clothes.
Prima Toys Bratz
I’m not sure how I feel about bringing Bratz into my Barbie world, but I guess it might be a good thing for me?

Looking at toys…

Now that we are looking at suitable toys for Lexa I’ve discovered just how easy the Prima Toys website makes it for parents. You tick a few boxes, press search and voila!

…and then when you choose a toy it even tells you where you can buy it.

That’s enough of toys today – I gotta get working.
