I never thought I’d work from home with a couple of rugrats, needy cat and nanny whose phone drives me up the walls. I thought I’d share 5 hard truths of having a home office – because you know it is so much fun not having to drive out to an office.

The snacks you buy for your office is for sharing – by everyone. Just because you bought snacks to help you get through the irritations and times of working from home it doesn’t mean your husband won’t guilt-trip you into sharing your precious stash.

Being called one million times an hour is really fun when it comes from your toddler. To make it even more fun you may be asked multiple times a day where sissy is or being told that the cat is naughty.

That cat you adopted and love so damn much is a needy little bugger that will obstruct your view everything. He also bites when moved.

You automatically become the school runner. Your time is real flexible, so when you quickly (30 mins or more at a time) need to drop off and pick up kids at school it definitely will not impact your work. Who doesn’t want to get out of the house at exactly 11.45 right when you are in the middle of trying to save a client from the end of the world?

It’s not so OK for you to want to continue working after the nanny leaves. You’ve been sitting all day not being interrupted by a toddler testing boundaries or a nanny who doesn’t understand that her ringtone and conversations can travel from one story of the house to the next – since there are no walls or doors.

I mean really, how can you not finish your work between schoolruns, being asked where sissy is, the cat that blacks out your view, hearing all about your nanny’s life and phone calls from clients?

So, before you say that OH YOU ARE SO LUCKY, think twice because I might just be hiding a lit fuse.

maar die selfsug pas jou goed!
jy los my nie dat ek kan vervaag

nes ek watte om my hart drapeer,
kom jy weer
verrinneweer my klein hartjie seer

jy vang my lippe
druk my hart
en stamp my ru weg

ek weet jy het ook êrens seer
maar deel met my ook die donker hel
ek was ook daardeur

I went to the Revlon sale last year and… even though the prices were good, it felt a little far to drive for a sale from where I live. However, if you are close then go, go, go!

The truth is I’m feeling lost. I miss my mom. I need to clear my head and the only way I know how to do that is to travel. We have one trip coming up this December, but I need one of those chaotic (not chaotic, but rather action-packed) trips that I’m known for.

December is all about my family this year. Taking Lily on her very first real holiday with a big sister that is water mad; adding in my dad, sister with her hubby and the 2 teenage cousins. It’s a family holiday we used to have regularly as kids with my parents – and we are just recreating our childhood with our own kids.

I can’t wait to create family holiday memories with my kids! Going from “you’ll never have your own” to having 2 of my own is kind of a big deal.

…but back to that trip that I so desperately need, for myself.

I planned a trip to Morocco last year, had the invoice in my hands – and then my mom was diagnosed with cancer. It was a knee jerk reaction to cancel all plans that could take me away from her. Now I need that trip more than anything.

I need to clear my head and be a nomad for just a little bit again.

This heart of mine was made to travel this world

Unknown

I want to walk through the bustling streets of Marrakech, drink in the blue of Chefchaouen, admire places like Fes and Rabat, chase seagulls in Essaouira, sleep in the desert and maybe even see the Morocco meteor shower in December. I want to stuff my face in Morocco with every flavour and drape myself in a cultural experience. Ag, how I dream of this place!

Why this obsession to travel and explore Morocco?

Morocco has always been this magical place at the top of Africa where the colours are brighter and the people are different.

Morocco Tours that I’m looking at right now:

She has that naughty little smile and big blue sparkling eyes firmly set on me just before she goes WHY!

It is the start of a a series of why’s and I can’t but help to answer BECAUSE. It quickly becomes a game of WHY and BECAUSE and giggling from the toddler. Even the baby crawls over to check in on the fun that is happening without her.

She finally loses interest and walks away to play with her Barbies. That lasted all but 3 minutes. They grow up so fast. Sigh.

The terrible twos marching towards being a threenager…

Today I’m sharing another recipe from the Disney COOKABOUT show. It is a quick recipe that is sure to have your kids and husband ask for more!

I prepared the Mousse with Basil Berry Salad as well as the Biltong and Avo Tacos with Chunky Salsa on the night. Both these Disney Cookabout Recipes were quick and easy – and very delicious

Ingredients

  • 2 wheat flower tortillas (you can probably fill 4 to 6 tortillas with the ingredients)
  • 15ml olive oil
  • 60ml low fat yogurt, plain
  • 30ml low fat/organic mayonnaise
  • 10ml lime juice
  • Zest of ½ small lime
  • 200ml thinly sliced red and green cabbage
  • 100g thinly sliced biltong (make this a lot more if your family loves it)
  • 1 avocado, peeled, seeded and cut into cubes

Salsa Ingredients

  • 30ml chopped spring onion
  • 80g small tomatoes, quartered
  • 80g corn kernels
  • 30ml chopped red pepper
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 30ml pickled coriander leaves
  • 10ml red wine vinegar
  • 5ml olive oil

Method

  • Mix the 15ml olive oil, yogurt, mayo, lime juice and zest together.
  • In another bowl combine the salsa ingredients and mix well.
  • Grill the tortillas until it is slightly charred and hot – or just warm it up in the microwave.
  • Assemble the tacos by adding cabbage, avo and biltong.
  • Serve with chunky salsa.

Notes

  • When you add the lemon juice, taste… don’t just add the lemon as it could become a bit overpowering.
  • You can also swop out the biltong for fried meat or chicken strips.

This is probably one of the most delicious desserts I have ever tasted. I definitely want to make this again and again and lick every last drop from the mixing bowls and ramekins.

I prepared the Mousse with Basil Berry Salad as well as the Biltong and Avo Tacos with Chunky Salsa on the night. Both these Disney Cookabout Recipes were quick and easy – and very delicious!

Basil Berry Ingredients

  • 100g mixed berries
  • 30ml passion fruit pulp
  • 4 basil leaves torn
  • Extra basil for serving

Method

  • Puree the strawberries in a blender and keep aside.
  • Beat the yogurt, mascarpone, vanilla seeds and honey until it is thick and fluffy. Place in fridge for 15 minutes to set.
  • Make the Basil berry salad by cutting the berries into halves and quarters. Add the passion fruit pulp and the basil mix gently. Keep aside.
  • Spoon the mousse into 2 serving glasses or ramekins and layer with strawberry puree.
  • Spoon the basil berry salad on top of the mousse.
  • Pour the left-over strawberry puree into a small jug and serve on the side.
