Have you ever tried driving the long road between Jozi and Durbs with 3 cats and a toddler? If it’s not the Sandton or Penny doing their pound-kitty howls it is Lexa. We also have to stop a whole lot more, making the trip up to 8 hours long.

Now that is a long time to be strapped into a chair for a kid…

Instead of packing bottles and containers with lots of different snacks and juices I’ve used the Fill n Squeeze bags. It takes up less space and Lexa loves the novelty.

Fill-n-Squeeze-baby-food-sachets

What’s in the sachets…

  • Water
  • Fruit juice
  • Custard with finely chopped fruits
  • Fruit smoothie
  • Baby food

We don’t buy juice boxes as (1) straws and (2) she never drinks the whole box. By pouring juice into the Fill n Squeeze bags we can give her just enough.

They are great for on the road – but even better if…

These little bags are also great if you want to make and freeze baby food at home.

  • 0,5cm spout
  • Marked at 30ml, 60ml, 90ml, 120ml and 150ml
  • Can be re-used
  • Even has a label for date and content description
  • Plus as an added bonus a monkey for each side

Funny enough, I haven’t been able to get a pic with Charlotte holding one as she is convinced I am out to steal her juice/food if it is in these sachets – but I will get her one of these days.

It’s weird, it’s one of those destinations where not even the tourism site has a lot of info. Travel agencies still look at you… weirdly and all you can do is trawl a lot of accounts of previous visitors to this little island in the Indian Ocean.

So this is what I know, we are going and soon. We have a car and accommodation. I’m not sure if there is a festival on or not, because dates on it is sparse. I kind of have an idea what we will do and see – but I don’t have a 100% plan.

We are definitely seeing volcanoes

Saint-Denis

St Denis, the capital city, offers a number of cultural sites that I am keen to explore.

  • Musee Leon Dierx which boast an impressive collection that include works by Picasso, Gauguin and Cézanne.
  • Cascade du Chaudron – apparently the pool at this waterfall is bluer than blue.
  • Grand Marche – a market or 2 is definitely on the list.
  • Kali Kampal Temple (Hindu Temple)
  • Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle de La Réunion
  • Saint-Denis Cathedral
  • Vanilla plantation

2 volcanoes

  • Piton des Neiges – which has been inactive for a very long time. Maybe we will hike a bit here. There is also a biological reserve here.
  • Piton de la Fournaise – one of the world’s most active volcanoes (fingers crossed to see some lava from a VERY safe distance). Hiking to Furnace Peak…

Hellbourg on the edge of Cirque de Salazie

Rumour has it that it is being lauded as the “most beautiful French village”. The Creole architecture is apparently amazing here and I’m a sucker for architecture. We are also going to eat our way through the local cuisine in this little town.

What I’m really looking forward to is a cultural and gastronomic experience. So my research is taking me to all sorts of weird and wonderful pages.

Be on the lookout for my next posts about planning for our Reunion Island trip – everything from packing lists to places to see.

I’m literally buggered. I was sick for just over 2 weeks in March with bronchitis but I worked right through it all, because that’s what you do. Then we went off to Salt Rock so hubby could go help his mom on the South Coast to sort out his dad’s belongings. I took my mom along, but with being weakened from being sick, the humidity and the kid it really took a toll on me.

When I got back to Joburg a package from Matsimela was waiting for me and I almost burst out crying from being thankful. I actually just thought that there must be someone out there that felt the vibes I was sending out.

So, what was in the box…

Matsimela Sandalwood and Vanilla Homespa products

Bunny soaps that smell like delicious “tameletjie” or really nice toffee. I could barely believe that it was just a soap. When you lather it up in your hands it is just to die for.

Matsimela Bunny

An amazing palm soap in Vanilla and Sandalwood. Showering that first day with this bar of soap was like a mini relaxing spa. It’s like having a delicious luxury that I don’t have to share with anyone – and I love it!

Matsimela Sandalwood and Vanilla Homespa products

I have written so many times about Matsimela’s bath soaks – and not just about the ones they’ve sent, but also the ones I buy. It’s a little tub of heaven that you can just drag out (of your secret hiding place) and pour into a nice bath for a bit of relaxation. I have given so many of these little tubs away as gifts as they are simply divine and won’t break the bank.

The new one is also Vanilla Sandalwood Kalahari Bath Soak and believe me when I say that you need to try it.

If by now you still haven’t gotten your hands on Matsimela products, visit www.matsimelaonline.com and spoil yourself – or drop a hint with hubby, family or friends that you need to be spoilt asap! What I like about Matsimela is that you have so much choice and every single product just smells soooooo good

Matsimela products on spoon

With Lexa I have learnt so much. You have to continuously challenge her else she gets bored or gets into things she shouldn’t. Meal times… oh my word, some days she tucks in and eats by herself and other days she wants to be fed. She loves macaroni and mince, don’t even get me started on spaghetti, vegetables she will take from your plate and go “mmmm”. She also has a taste for spicy foods, so weird.

Since we tested out the JJ’s sippy cup I thought I’d ask what other products they have available in South Africa and it turns out they have the coolest thing for meal time! Bowls that make sounds! I’m just sharing the information – but I’m definitely getting Lexa one, this is a gadget that comes in cat form and… I love cats, she loves cats and she loves when they meow!

Bring Meal Times To Life With JJ’s Animal Snackers

Stir your child’s imagination, excite their mind and stimulate their sensory ability with JJ’s Animal Snacker bowls, now available in SA through Prima Baby.

When every spoonful activates an animal sound, what baby wouldn’t want to laugh with the roar of the hippo or the meow of the cat whilst eating?

The animal sounds of the snacker teaches babies to accept new ideas and interact with challenging concepts – literally with every spoonful of food!  The magic spoon is activated by moving within the bowl and in turn lets out an accompanying sound that is either friendly dinosaur, cat, doggie or pig.

Despite being loads of fun and laughter for child and parents, the bowls are also microwavable and dishwasher safe too.  A strong suction cup keeps base secure to table or highchair to avoid spills.  Try an Animal Snacker bowl today to bring some new fun to meal times.

Ages: 10 months and up.

Available at: Hamleys Toy Stores, selected Kids Emporium stores,  www.loot.co.za, www.thebabyzone.co.za, www.purplepepperz.com, www.takealot.com & www.sosobabies.com

When your husband says it is the best sippy (spout) cup ever and you need to get more, you listen.

Lexa loves her water, but she also loves to spill water everywhere. She even holds the water in her mouth just to spit it out into a cup or bowl – or on top of a table.

JJ's sippy cup

So when the JJ’s Rocket Boy arrived from Prima Baby, I was skeptical until I looked a little closer.

  • It has double handles to hold onto – and can be used to hang onto the pram/chair.
  • It holds up to 300ml (we have the 6+ months cup), but we always just fill it halfway as I’m scared Lexa will whack one of my cats with it.
  • The top is a soft clear silicone piece – like a baby bottle – with a non-spill opening. This means nothing can grow in places you can’t see and you can just wash it with the bottles.
  • You can also chuck it in the dishwasher!
  • BPA free.

We have been using it for about a month and to me, it is actually a product that I would recommend and buy. To be honest, I have chucked out so many leaky sippy cups or ones that I’ve started having second thoughts about.

PS. Just try and keep their fingers out of the spout… it stretches a little if tortured too much.

When an invite popped into my inbox to celebrate 59 years of Barbie – I couldn’t RSVP fast enough! On the day I arrived late (which is really unlike me) and grabbed a seat right at the front during the presentation. Highlights for me included learning that Barbie clothing is actually made in South Africa (all about that in a next post), meeting up with my Blogger Bestie Miss Chanene from Tonics & Tiaras, eating Barbie birthday cake (woohoo!) and going home with a brand spanking new Barbie and Barbie cup.

#YouCanBeAnything

What I love most about Barbie is that she isn’t just a pretty doll, she is actually a role model. She shows girls that they can be anything and that it is OK to be different.

I know that you are probably going “show me the pictures”, so here goes, a post full of pictures.

You Can Be Anything with Barbie

Recognise Sureshnie Rider from 5FM? She told us all about how she saved up as a kid to buy her own Barbie and how she used to play with a friend’s Barbie because she didn’t have one.

…but wait, there is more!

My aunt visited the day before we left for KZN over the Easter long weekend. When she left I checked that her handbag was in her car’s boot – because the last time she left it on her passenger seat and her bag got stolen. Next morning at 6.30 am just as the Doom Foggers filled the House with billowing clouds of poison and we had locked the front door I got a frantic call…

My aunt wanted us to look for her phone that she may/may not have left in our house. I protested and declined to go back into a house filled with poison on the off-chance that it may still be on a couch my husband occupied after her departure

4 days later she phoned to let us know she found it in the back of her car in the jacket she wore that day. True story.

It made me wonder what can be used to help older people and adventurous travelers keep track of valuables – and then I found this…

Keys and portables will never go missing in action again

Keep track of everything you cannot afford to lose with nifty Orbits to call you to their location – wherever and whenever. Laptops, wallets, mobile phones, cameras and keys will never go missing in action with Orbit, a family of Bluetooth trackers.

Now in South Africa thanks to Gammatek, a leading distributor of branded technologies and accessories, Orbit is the ultimate portable possessions locator. Linked with the downloadable Orbit App, an Orbit – stuck on valuables or attached to keys – makes anything that is lost, found.

According to Gammatek’s Zev Cherniak, there are three varieties of Orbit available in South Africa; Orbit Stick-On, Orbit Card and Orbit Keys.

Orbit Stick-On is perfect for remote controls, laptops, mobile phones, tools, guitars and more. With the keyring attachment, it can be used on house and car keys, backpacks, luggage and cameras. Orbit Card is a non-obtrusive card that can be slipped into a wallet or purse, while Orbit Keys is designed specifically for keyrings.

“Using the app you can make your Orbit ring or check its last known GPS location. All of your Orbits can be tracked using the Orbit App. Orbit can also find your phone by making it ring even on silent. An added bonus is that Orbit can be used as a selfie remote,’ says Cherniak.

This puts an end to frenzied searches for misplaced valuables. To locate something that is missing, simply press the “Find Orbit” button on your mobile phone. If in range, the Orbit will play a melodic tune to alert you. When out of Bluetooth range of 30 metres, you can locate the missing item by means of its last known GPS location using the Orbit App. If it is your phone you are seeking, press the button on the side of your Orbit Card, Orbit Stick-On or Orbit Keys and it will make your phone ring. To take a selfie or group shot, open the in-app camera and use Orbit as a camera remote.

The Orbit Stick-On is powered by a replaceable CR2025 3 volt battery which can last up to a year. Orbit Card comes with a charging cable for recharging time and time again. Orbit Card will last about three months once fully charged. Orbit Keys is also powered by a replaceable battery.

Orbit is made available by Gammatek at leading retailers in South Africa. These include selected Vodacom stores, takelot.com, Loot.

With the Easter long weekend only days away it doesn’t matter whether you’re planning a visit to the grandparents or escaping on a family getaway – travelling with kids can often be challenging. Think limited packing space, long hours in the car, queues at airports, impatient children and holiday traffic.

To ensure a happy ‘crew’- Hasbro, one of the world’s largest toy, game and entertainment experience companies, has a few tips to offer weary would-be travellers:

Pack light on non-essential items. Whatever the occasion, once you leave the house there’s no reason to weigh yourself down with heavy bags. Keep a ziplock bag filled with wipes and a basic change of clothes handy for any accidental spills along the way and consider travel sized toiletries to save space.

Snack Time – stock up on a variety of healthier, on the go snacks like fresh vegetable sticks, dried fruit, mixed nuts, homemade popcorn and biltong to keep energy levels high (without all the processed sugar). Don’t forget the importance of hydration so keep bottles of water handy at all times. A packed easy-to-get-to lunch can also help keep the costs down and provide a nice picnic break along the journey. Consider simple finger foods such as chicken drumsticks, vegetable skewers and pre-cut sandwiches/rolls.

Board games provide great entertainment for the whole family. The portable Grab & Go selection from Hasbro Gaming is ideal for convenient, on-the-go fun and includes classics such as Monopoly, Clue, Battleship, Connect 4 and Guess Who? and the latest addition to the range Hungry Hippo.

Theme your trip with the game chosen to add excitement for the destination ahead. If you are heading to the bush give Hungry Hippo a go or if you are seaside bound Battleship it is.

The easy to store, affordable Grab & Go selection allows you to keep a range of games on-hand with options suited to the whole family. If you’re hunkering down at home for the long weekend, this provides a great opportunity to enjoy some fun family time with activities everyone can participate in.

Car Karaoke is a great way to keep the troops engaged, and immerse them in the music you love. Create a playlist before leaving home with options the whole family will enjoy and encourage all to join in a sing-a-long during the trip.

Countdowns help pass the time and a countdown to your destination is a fun way to keep everyone involved. Use visual aids that the kids can decorate in order to mark off time, keep them occupied and get them excited for the destination.

Get to Know the Grab & Go range:

Battleship Grab & Go is the classic game of naval combat that brings together competition, strategy, and excitement. In head-to-head battle, players search for the enemy’s fleet of ships and destroy them one by one. No ship is safe in this game of stealth and suspense.

In Connect 4 Grab & Go challenge a friend to rule the grid and be the first player to get four of your colour counters in a row. The game where strategy drives the competition – line ‘em up and go for the win.

There’s a mystery that needs solving, and you’re just the detective to do it on the go with this Grab & Go version of the classic Clue game. Who killed the host of the fancy party? Where were they, and what weapon did they use? When the case is solved, you can store all the cards and parts in the all-in-one game unit – until the next mystery.

Get ready for classic Monopoly play in a portable way. This mobile Monopoly Grab & Go game lets you trade your way to success while you roll with whatever comes your way from the Chance and Community Chest cards. It’s the perfect, compact way to have Monopoly fun anytime, anywhere!

Chomp, chomp – you’ve got some hungry hippos on your hands. This Grab & Go version of the classic Hungry Hippos game has two chomping hippos and a whole bunch of marbles for munching. With a plastic cover to keep the marbles from rolling out, this compact game lets you have hippo-feeding fun anytime, anywhere.

Who’s the champion guesser? Maybe it’s you in this Guess Who? Grab & Go version. Every time you ask your opponent a yes or no question, the answer gets you closer to who’s on their Mystery Card. But you better watch out, because they’ll be asking you questions too.

The Grab & Go range from Hasbro Gaming is available from Toys R Us, ToyZone, Toy Kingdom, Hamleys, Lilliputs, Takealot.com and other major retailers.
