I am really trying to live a more mindful life. I take note of what I buy, try to avoid single use plastics and polystyrenes. I even try to safe water where I can and it starts with brushing my teeth.

Before reading the rest of this post, do you:

  • Let the tap run while you brush your teeth
  • Use the tap to wet your tootbrush and toothpaste and then use it again to rinse
  • Use a cup/glass

According to waterwise.org.uk, if we leave the tap running while we brush our teeth, and brush our teeth the recommended twice a day for two minutes, we waste 24 litres of water every day!In one year, a person following this daily tooth-brushing routine could use eight kilolitres – the equivalent of a small swimming pool of water, every year! However, the #EveryCupCounts method of brushing and rinsing with a single cup of water, cuts water consumption by 98%!

#EveryCupCounts with Colgate. Use one cup to brush and save thousands of litres!

Colgate-Palmolive launched the #EveryCupCounts campaign to drive awareness of South Africa’s urgent need to save water, offering practical advice on how to make a daily difference with responsible water use. “The #EveryCupCounts campaign is part of  our commitment to raising awareness about water conservation,” commented Mauricio Moutinho, Director of Marketing, Colgate-Palmolive, South Africa. We believe it is part of our responsibility to educate people on how to use water resourcefully as well as reduce one’s water footprint when using our products to brush their teeth.” The digital campaign aims to create awareness around water saving and how a simple lifestyle adjustment like using a single cup to brush our teeth can save water. The campaign is part of a broader strategy to help Colgate improve lives through better oral hygiene practices, and water management, giving all a future to smile about.

It’s really important that we preserve this unique, precious resource. Water is fundamental to life. As we go through dry periods, our lives and our livelihoods are going to be more deeply compromised. Methods like #EveryCupCounts are key to saving water and avoiding that.

Today, I understand that water is a scarce resource that we should preserve for future generations. After hearing how we can save thousands of litres a year by doing something as simple as using a cup to brush our teeth, I was even more motivated to make a change. It is easy, straightforward, and we should motivate others to do the same.

Colgate’s Bright Smiles, Bright Futures (BSBF) initiative brings oral care education and samples to 1.8 million children per year across South Africa.3 Colgate also maintains 26 play pumps, which pump water when children play on a playground roundabout. They are located within reach of 10 000 children and their families to ensure that these communities continue to receive safe water.

In what feels like forever ago I met a professional Make-up Artist for a photoshoot with Your Family magazine end of 2017. I kept on checking on his Facebook and Instagram on what he was up to and then one day I see that he has launched his very own make-up palette.

The Freak Unique palette has the most beautiful colours that I’ve seen him use on his clients – and it is the first independently created and launched palette by Makeup by Ryno Mulder. I’m excited to see what is next…

I want to celebrate well known and not-so-well-known trailblazers of individuality. People who inspire me and others. Makeup has always been a way for them and for me to express individuality. The message is that expressing your creativity is necessary for more love, more acceptance and for the evolution of mankind. We should all discover our uniqueness and let our freak flags fly.

Why did you create your own makeup palette?

In a world of corporate giants, mass production and hype I was looking for a cosmetics line with authenticity, audacity and a unique point of view. Considering my background as beauty editor, makeover specialist and makeup artist I figured “why not do it myself!”

How long did development take and what was the process?

It was trial and error. I had been exploring the possibilities for the past two years. I knocked on many doors in many countries and was introduced to key players by a friend in California who has a successful makeup line. I checked hundreds of samples and travelled to the biggest international East-meets-West cosmetics trade fair to learn about product development first hand. In 2018 I took the leap, used my life savings and invested in a humble quantity of stock. I didn’t know if one person would buy my palette so I was genuinely grateful when my entire stock holding sold out in just over a week. I went through the whole process again (but much faster this time!) to meet demand for more Freak Unique palettes.

How did you decide on the colours?

I have a signature makeup style so my objective was to launch a palette that contain my ‘go to’ eyeshadow shades. This way my followers – especially those who attend my makeup masterclasses – can recreate my eye makeup looks on themselves using just one palette. Colour payoff and pigment quality at an affordable retail price were the other key considerations.

How does this palette stand out amongst competitors?

The Freak Unique eyeshadows are waterproof and sweat-resistant giving you a look that will last all day and night – even in the most humid weather conditions. The high quality mirrored compact is wrapped in eco-friendly rose gold paper packaging and all sixteen eyeshadows are cruelty-free.

Where is it sold?

The Freak Unique eyeshadow palette retails for R390 and is available online from www.burstmakeupbrushes.co.za as well as dollmeupfashion.com as well as at my Makeup Masterclass. For more information contact Makeup by Ryno on 071 688 0242 or email ryno@makeupbyryno.co.za.

I loved watching Sex and The city. Those girls were the epitome of what friendship should be. They were there for each other through the good, the bad and everything inbetween.

“A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”

Walter Winchell

Finally in adulthood I have 2 best friends. We don’t hang out every weekend but when we see each other we pick up where we left off. It’s the way we like it, it works for us.

Then I made some friends from work. Every couple of months we all just check in but if we see each other or not, it doesn’t matter. There are the exceptions that live very far now that I have seen since we all split especially my friend in UK whom I absolutely just adore.

At the last company I worked we got a new boss and obviously everyone was stalking her online and I took one look at the photo and I predicted exactly how her personality would affect us all. Every single thing I said reared its ugly head and was even worse than I predicted. This woman forced us to bond together to protect each other.

New friends… I’ve never really been a very social person and I find it hard to connect with “humans” because I judge people and put them in a box. I’ve rarely been wrong, but it also means that before you had a chance to show who you are I’ve tagged and flagged you.

So how do you know when your friendship is over?

Answer these questions and decide if the writing is on the wall:

  • When last did you connect?
  • Do you still share interests?
  • Who do you share your good news with?
  • Do you still have anything to talk about?
  • Do you celebrate each other’s achievements?
  • Do they make you feel bad about yourself?
  • Are they taking advantage of you?

No one likes letting go of a friendship, but sometimes you just outgrow each other and then it is time to let go. It is better to realise that not all friendships are made to last.

The only things you should never skimp on is saving, education and travel. You can take that to the bank.

Run your finances like a business

Your salary gets sliced into so many pieces and before you know it most of it has evaporated and you are left wondering where it all went.

The simplest way to keep track of you income and expenses is to keep an eye on your bank statement, but if you have more than one account… you’ll need to put in a little more effort. Draw up a spreadsheet or do proper bookkeeping and see where you are wasting and can trim expenses. Make it a set task you do on a weekly basis.

Regularly go through your bank statements. You need to know what is happening. Cut what you don’t need.

Did you know that you should be getting insurance quotes on a yearly basis? Even if you don’t go with another insurer you can use comparative quotes to get a discount. I was with an insurance company for 12 years and eventually ended up paying almost R500 for household insurance a month – even with discounts. Finally last year I moved to Virseker and only pay R119… that is quite a saving!

When you start adding up all the little savings you’ll be surprised at just how much it is.

Save like there is a tomorrow

Your goal should be to pay off your credit card bills in full at the end of each month and set aside money toward your emergency savings.

Suze Orman

I save on a monthly basis. I have an retirement annuity, 7 and 32 day notice accounts that each get a set amount transferred into it.  Also invested in property and pay extra towards the last few hundred thousands I still owe on the bonds.

Even more important than my own savings are our kids’ savings. Each kid gets a small amount from each of us into their own accounts.

Each month we also put a bit into a 32 day notice account for travels. This is our kitty for international travel so we can take the kids along without worrying about the extra costs.

However, spoil yourself sometimes. Go for that movie, eat out , buy that dress – but all in moderation.

Travel more often

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.

Saint Augustine

Families that travel together stay together… You don’t have to go to international destinations to travel, you can also explore our beautiful country too!

I have so many fond memories from family holidays in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana with my parents and sister – and I want to continue the tradition.

The more you know the smarter you’ll be with your money

I cannot stress this enough, invest in yourself and your education. Without learning something new and growing your skills you might as well give up on your future (and travel).

You don’t have to do the most expensive courses either. You can choose online short courses that will add to your CV. You can even opt for free courses offered by Google (if that’s your industry).

Point is, never stop being a learner.

Shopping Tips

If you live in a big city like Joburg, Cape Town or Durban you sometimes get the chance to shop directly from big warehouse distributors for everything from make-up to clothes and everything inbetween. Just ask me, there is nothing better than using your favourite (very expensive) cream and not paying full-price.

Wait for the sales. There is nothing wrong with wearing your clothes for a couple of seasons (shock/horror) and there is nothing wrong with buying end of season clothes to update your cupboard. Just shop smart, look for the styles that are timeless.

Don’t buy it just because it is on sale. The rush of finding something that is just such a great bargain can sometimes cloud your judgement. Give yourself a 10 minute breather in the shop before rushing to pay for it.

My ouma-hulle het ‘n vyeboom gehad in hul groot plaastuin.

  3. My pa se Brahmane wat blink in die son

Daardie vye op my grootouers se plaas is ‘n metafoor vir hoe ‘n mens moet lewe. Pluk dit terwyl jy kan. Eet dit terwyl dit lekker soet is. Wag vir die volgende seisoen.

That birthday photo… I had a few requests to share from where I got the dress to “popcorn cake – how?”…

The dress – that dress is from Milady’s and is currently on sale for just over R200. I have it in olive green and red.

The lipstick – I can thank Stila for this amazing colour on my lips. It is a liquid matte lipstick in Portofino. It is probably the most gorgeous colour on me (other than red).

The cake – I saw a video about a popcorn cake and then I knew I wanted one. I didn’t use that much chocolate because I’m not the sweetest tooth around.

The Popcorn Cake Recipe

  • 400g of popcorn
  • 250g butter
  • 800g marshmallows
  • Food colouring
  • 400g of chocolate
  • 250ml whipping cream
  • 100s & 1000s
  • 4 x Spray & Cooked cake pans
  1. Split the popcorn, butter and marshmallows in half.
  2. Get your popcorn popped before starting on your marshmallows.
  3. Melt half your marshmallows and half the butter in a pot or in the microwave.
  4. As soon as it is melted stir in half the popcorn – but work quickly!Pour it into 2 cake pans and put in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
  5. Do the second batch of marshmallows with butter and add a drop of food colouring to add a pop of colour and mix in your popcorn. Pour into pans and pop it into the fridge.
  6. You can do this about an hour before you want to eat the cake. Melt the chocolate and cream in the microwave 20 seconds at a time, stir. Use the ganache to spread between the layers and on top. Add some sprinkles for more fun.

I’m as sentimental as an old lady. Every single piece of jewellery my parents bestowed upon my younger self, I treasure. I have all my silver rings, necklaces and sometimes I still mix them in with my newer pieces.

When you love someone all your saved up wishes start coming out. – Elizabeth Bowen

When I saw Pandora’s latest Wish Collection I immediately opened my treasure box to find my “wish ring” (from the 90’s) and I smiled… wishes do come true.

What I love about Pandora is that I can build a collection for my 2 daughters so that one day they have all these amazing things that will remind them just how much I love them. I don’t have to buy a full collection, I can mix and match to suit each child.

The Pandora Wish Collection

Stack them, mix tones, wear them solo, minimalistic or blinged up – it’s all about self-expression. See the whole collection here.

Pandora Wishes Collection

These and more will be available online and at all Pandora shops this February.

Wish for more…

More Pandora

I wish I had 2 seconds to rub together… seriously, just 2 seconds to myself. My husband was in hospital for a week.
If I was a stay at home mom it would be my sole job to look after the kids and cook – so it probably wouldn’t have impacted me as much. I’m not a stay at home mom, I work full time and have clients that expect services and deliverables. I can’t say I’ll do it tomorrow as if it’s nothing, if I don’t deliver my clients’ bread and butter getsaffected and then I might lose my client.
I probably haven’t slept more than 4 hours a day (since husband got admitted) and none of those hours were continuous. I haven’t been able to sit and work when the kids are off to bed because I am just so tired.
Getting up for 2 kids all hours of the night and then having to sit and wait for the nanny that arrives late every morning has me climbing up the walls. Every day she is late I am late and to me being late is the absolute end of the world. I get anxious and angry plus then add the tiredness and I’m a red hot fire that needs to contain itself.
Don’t get me wrong, I love working from home and not sitting in traffic to Sandton every day. However, I wish I could sit and work anywhere in my house without a toddler trying to get in on the laptop action by screaming like an absolute terror.
I can moan if I want to, because it’s hard to have a career/business and still be a parent when your co-parent isn’t around.

Last year I was invited to a PR event to learn more about MUD South Africa. Little did I know that we would be meeting the owner, Brenda Botha – or that she would be so relatable.

I have been holding onto this piece about MUD since July! Inbetween we went to Reunion Island and we had another baby… but it was always there just waiting. I’ve rewritten it so many times because it felt like I didn’t do the experience or brand justice.

Retrenchment is coming…

A few months before Brenda was retrenched from her job at a cosmetics company she per chance met an owner of a South African based cosmetics company. At the time she wasn’t interested, but she took the card anyway.

After her retrenchment she decided to Google the company South African Mud Cosmetics but the website was down – instead she stumbled upon MUD in LA. She immediately fell in love with the brand and knew that this is what she wanted to do. She ordered samples…

When her MUD samples arrived, her fate was sealed.

Bringing MUD to South Africa

At first MUD wasn’t interested in expanding into South Africa, but Brenda was determined. Eventually she met with the LA-based owners and she made it happen!

It hasn’t always been easy for this non-corporate company with it’s small marketing budget in the beginning. However now MUD South Africa supplies professional make-up kits to students and make-up artists, train make-up artists and offer make-up services to the public. There are professional make-up kits as well as direct-to-consumer products.

What you need to know about MUD

MUD believes the true purpose of make-up is to correct, cover and conceal.

  • MUD products are pigmented, lasts longer and uses higher quality ingredients.
  • Quality comes down to the milling and pressing too.
  • Quality control – Each batch of products has to be quality approved before it gets sent out to customers.
  • MUD covers professional and home user products.
  • All MUD make-up artists have to complete their training at one of MUD’s training facilities.
MUD Cosmetics eyeshadow to lipstick

MUD South Africa is owned by a woman that had the determination to realize her dream – even after retrenchment.

What you need to know about Brenda Botha

Brenda Botha MUD SOuth Africa

  • Brenda was raised in the small Karoo town, Middleburg, and matriculated in Bloemfontein.
  • She went on to study Somatology and practiced as a beauty therapist for one of South Africa’s award-winning skincare brands.
  • She has the prestigious CIDESCO qualification for Beauty and Aesthetics under her belt and over 10 years’ experience in the beauty industry.

My MUD experience

What struck me most about MUD is the versatility and pigment in the products. The demonstration at the PR event included a day-to-night make-up look with a single palette; as well as a demonstration on using eyeshadow as lipstick; Swatching ourselves with eyeshadows and lipsticks was encouraged too.

  • I loved the magnetic palette casings that you could fill with all your favourite colors
  • The lipsticks…

I fell in love with this brand too, just like owner Brenda Botha. I also got to take home a little bit of her dream in the form of a MUD palette that I have been using regularly ever since.

Since the PR event I have been toying with the idea of following my dream too… and it involves makeup and investing in myself. Plus now that I’m on the road of not spending on doctors…
