I get quite a bit of products that come across my desk and I try to share my thoughts as honestly as possible. This time around I got to test out a whole load of Oolala Collection’s skincare products.

My skin

I have a sensitive skin that is almost the colour of porcelain. (Think, the lightest foundation… but lighter.) In winter I struggle with dry patches, have a bit of sun damage and I’m petrified of fine lines and wrinkles.

The Oolala Collection products I’ve tried…

Hyaluronic Oil Moisture Boost Night

This serum is packed with oils! I used it 3 times a week to get rid of my winter dry patches – and it worked! Since I sometimes don’t leave the house, I would do the treatment will sitting at my desk instead of at night.

The only thing I could complain about is that it has quite a strong scent, but it is to be expected with tea tree oil as one of its ingredients.

I didn’t have any of the other products whilst using this, but the website notes that you should alternate with the SkinESSENTIALS Night Moisturiser for best results.

In this product you will find ingredients such as grape seed oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil and tea tree oil (there is more). I already have most of these oils at home to mix into my shampoo/conditioner, so I know that they are excellent.

Gentle Apricot Kernel Scrub

This was probably my favourite product from the collection! It smells divine, plus it feels more like a cream with a slight texture. I could actually imagine being at a spa having a facial with this.

After using the Apricot Kernel Scrub, my skin felt extremely soft. I wish this was an all-day-every-day cream! If you get nothing else from Oolala, get this.

Radiance Repair Serum

This little tester was packed with surprise. I do have some sun damage and pigmentation and decided to whack it onto a patch on my lower jaw line (I should’ve take a photo).

The patch is a bit lighter now, but it could also be because of the mixture of products I used. I also applied some of this serum onto a particularly nasty cat scratch on my hand and the redness subsided very quickly.

Once again, it is packed with extracts from natural ingredients like arnica, cucumber, elder tree, ivy and more.

2in1 Deep Facial Cleanser With Toner – Alcohol Free

This is everything you want your facial cleanser to be. It is alcohol free and has a toner to get rid of excess oil, dirt and dead cells. It feels like a gel, but not as gross, and it doesn’t make foam.

One thing I have noticed is that my pores seem to “look a little less prominent” after using this morning and night for about a week.

This is one of the cheaper products from Oolala Collection, but I think that it is worth it for how it made my skin look and feel.

Do you have any questions about your skin and which Oolala Collection products Daniella would recommend?

Next part of the review…

This will contain reviews about the cream and zit care (from a teenager). Plus I will let you know if the day cream messed with my make-up or not!

I never really write about Lexa or how she is doing, but sometimes I wonder who will tell her of all the things she got up to if I’m gone too soon.

We have all had the superbug going around. It was quite hard with all 3 of us sick at the same time. We would just sprawl out on the couches and she would destroy the house. However, she did keep little Sandton on the staright and narrow by telling him NO when he jumped on the other cats or sharpened his nails on the furniture.

International travel

I get asked quite a lot if Lexa was a pain on the plane when we went to Reunion Island. The simple answer is that she was actually a pleasant traveller. She loved looking out the window, didn’t scream once and played her little heart out.

She didn’t like to be clipped in on take-off or landing, but as soon as she was unclipped it was all good.

School

Lexa now goes to play school twice a week. It takes 5 minutes to get there and then I sit in a coffee shop for 4 hours before picking her up.

In the beginning she didn’t want to stay when I dropped her off, now she runs in. In the afternoons she jumps into my arms.

She seems quite happy when at school – I do sneak up on her to catch a glimpse. Plus the “artwork” she brings home is quite entertaining. The teacher mentioned she made a BFF – can that even happen at their age?

At home

We have huge lounge furniture and Lexa moves the 2 and 3 seater couches around. Our house is now pretty much bare due to her hulking abilities – and also because she climbs on everything to pull down anything she can get her hands on.

We do not trust silences anymore – and definitely not when she runs to her room and closes the door behind her.

Words

It speaks! Lexa understands a lot, but her own speech is still limited. She says:

  • Dud for dad
  • Tan for me
  • Tanton for Sandton
  • Kitteh for all those naughty black cats I have

She also has non-verbal communications that involve asking for my bangles and rings. It is hilarious! Her little arm goes up to eye level with her hand bend towards the ground for bangles. For rings she adds an outstretched index finger.

Lexa is quite a happy kid and hopefully she stays that way with a younger sibling on the way.

Having Lexa has changed our lives and we’ve had to adapt to having a kid in the house. There are times when you wish you can have just 5 minutes of silence… but then you realise that she’ll be up to no good if that wish comes true!

5 things I’ve learnt as a parent

  1. Just because it is bed time…
Our ideal may be that Lexa goes to bed at 6 and get up at 7 the next morning, but time means nothing when there is a kid involved. Sometimes no matter what you do there is no nap during the day and when that happens night time is a nightmare. Waking up at 3 in the morning to give a fresh bottle and do a diaper change should be done cat burglar quiet.
  2. Food…
Food from your plate tastes better than the bowl of food dished from the same pots and pans as your food. Also, don’t expect to be able to eat all the food on your plate all by yourself. Also look out for the food that gets spit back onto your plate. Sometimes it’s OK to eat floor crisps if that is all you are going to get – really.
  3. New clothes…
The most important thing is to remove the tags before you get home and hand over a bag of clothes still in the bag. That way Lexa can drag around her new clothes in a bag – sometimes she won’t remove it. Leaving on the tags will only result in clothes with holes.
  4. Handbags aren’t sacred…
When you love handbags as much as I do you treat them like little pieces of gold, but when you have a kid that wants to carry it around, spit half chewed sweets in it… that’s when you know it is time to gift her with her very own handbag.
  5. Everybody has an opinion…
I’m talking about dear mother in law has a little nugget to share about each and every thing you do, but she can’t even keep her own cellphone safe. Nip it in the bud, if you allow it, it will never stop. As parents we can only do our best, we don’t need the peanut gallery.

If you would like to share the things you’ve learnt as a parent, pop it into the comments section below.

Social Media…

Mom’s that think it is OK to share photos of their children online half-naked, tagged at specific locations or in school uniforms should wake up to the security risks associated with that. Did you know that if you get tagged by friends that regularly check-in at home and all that nice location data you give out on social media can be used to track you and ultimately let anyone find you (and your child)? Just saying…

Can you believe that The Muppets graced our screens 30 years ago for the first time? The glamorous Miss Piggy and dry Kermit the Frog was favourites while we were growing up. We didn’t care that it was an Emmy® Award-winning series, we just loved the characters!

Now there is “Muppet Babies”!

The hilarious playroom antics of a young Kermit the Frog, Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and Animal – plus a brand new Muppet Baby, Summer Penguin under the watchful eye of Miss Nanny will once again entertain.

The all-new CG-animated “Muppet Babies”, based on the original series, is geared towards kids 2-7 and their families, with each episode featuring two 11-minute stories.

The Muppet Babies Show

Set in the vibrant playroom of an urban brownstone with an expansive backyard, the Muppet Babies have everything they need at their fingertips to lead them on their fantastical adventures. The backyard alone is home to Kermit’s bouncy “pond,” Piggy’s dressing room, Summer’s art table, Gonzo’s chicken coop, Fozzie’s stage and a communal treehouse. In every episode, through a rainbow transition, the Muppet Babies use their imaginations to transport them into a fantasy sequence, each with a distinct style ranging from collage, comic book and classic cartoons to live-action footage.

The unique look of the series is accentuated by the style and design of the Muppet Babies characters, which were created to look like the original Muppet Babies puppet characters from “The Muppets Take Manhattan.” The creative team conducted hours of research, including studying the movements of the original Muppet Babies puppets and developed a digital simulation technique called “Jiggle Tech” which allows the animated Muppet Babies to move just like their puppet character counterparts.

Original songs

Music also plays an important role in the series, with almost every episode featuring original songs ranging in different musical styles from 70s disco to contemporary. The series’ iconic theme song has also been reimagined for a new generation by the acclaimed songwriting team of Kay Hanley, Michelle Lewis and Dan Petty (“Doc McStuffins”) and is performed by Tony Award®-winner Renée Elise Goldsberry (Broadway’s “Hamilton”).

Who is behind the Muppet Babies?

“Muppet Babies” is a co-production between Disney Junior, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media’s (DCPI) Publishing and Digital Media Group, and The Muppets Studio. Tom Warburton (Disney’s “The 7D”) is executive producer and Emmy Awardwinner Eric Shaw (“SpongeBob SquarePants”) is story editor and co-producer. Andy Bean (“Puppy Dog Pals”) serves as the series’ songwriter/composer and Keith Horn (Disney’s “The 7D”) is co-composer.

“Friends are the best thing in the world.”

Back in 1968 Barbie, Christie (in tangerine) and Stacey (in the 2 piece) became friends. 50 years later we have Mattel brought the 3 together again as a boxed Barbie Mod Friends set.

Don’t these just bring back memories from an iconic fashion era?

I like to think people come to my blog(s) for more than the perfume sale dates, but as soon as the sale ends, I get asked when the next one is happening. I love that!

If you don’t know, I run another blog called Everything4Less where I try to share as much info I can on bargain shopping opportunities. There is almost nothing that can make me happier than finding a gem at a great price at a factory shop. Like girl, I have so many labels – but I got them from factory shops.

My BFF moved to Cape Town (getting angry all over again) so she will be my chauffeur in her Beamer for all my factory shopping requirements. You will see me coming, big sunglasses, scarve on the hair and car top down.

Let me not bore you and get to the point, I begged for dates about the perfume sale… and here it is 🙂

The perfume sale is open to the public from the 24th to 28th of October 2018.

The sale times are usually this, but I will confirm it closer to the time again as well.

  • Thursday @ 08h00 – 18h00
  • Friday @ 08h00 – 18h00
  • Saturday @ 08h00 – 16h00
  • Sunday @ 08h00 – 13h00

The rules at this sale:

I recently wrote about ‘Finding the Oolala in skincare’ and now you’ll get to meet the owner of this South African skincare range.

Who is…?

Daniella Shapiro is the founder of the Oolala Collection Club; She is also a speaker and marketing expert with her own consultancy; And made the watch list of top 50 SA business women to watch earlier this year.

Once upon a time she also chased success in the corporate world until she realised that burning out shouldn’t be the price to pay for accomplishment and success. She freed herself from this oh so familiar mindset that most of us get trapped in and strategically thought about how she can create a future where she can make a difference in her own unique way.

“…there is a great deal to gain from freeing yourself of the collective delusion that burning out is the necessary price for accomplishment and success.”

What does it take to start your own skincare collection?

To start your own skincare collection takes buckets of determination. It’s a process where you have to invest in research and development, branding and marketing of your product. Coming up with the concept that would establish your brand as a serious player in a market that is overcrowded – and this is where Daniella’s expertise came in handy.

As with any business idea she had to do her homework before jumping in, but once she knew that her vision was possible she made no excuses and rolled with it. Not only did Daniella find a niche market, but she also found a way to make her products unique.

With the Oolala Collection Daniella chose to think outside of the gender box and created a unisex skincare range that is ethical. The Oolala Collection is also backed by Beauty Without Cruelty and VeganSA – with the added bonus of no excess packaging to add to landfills.

On Daniella’s journey she has learnt that there is no set path to success and that sometimes you just have to go out on a limb; take calculated risks and learn from mistakes. There will also not be a pat on the back when you get it right, but you do have to celebrate the victories with the team that is with you in the trenches.

“New ideas and trends crop up every day, allow your creativity and your mind to think big and be open and never allow yourself to be boxed into that “perfect plan”.

At Oolala there is never a moment where the user experience (on their online shop) isn’t in a cycle of improvement and there is never a moment where there isn’t an idea that needs to be tested. You can also read about the new OolalaSWEAT range below…

Asking people what they do when they aren’t working is one of my favourite questions and Daniella as a typical type A personality did not disappoint! She is into fitness and adventures with her sidekicks Gavi and Mischa; but also enjoys a good pampering and bingeing on series.

PS. When you get to the end of this article I have a surprise 🙂

And then as per usual I like to leave in part of an interview in their own words to capture their real thoughts without my own opinion weaved in.

“A person who sees a problem is a human being; a person who finds a solution is visionary; and the person who goes out and does something about it is an entrepreneur.” – Naveen Jain

What is the most valuable lessons you learnt along the way?

Starting your own business is exciting, exhausting, frustrating, challenging, eye opening and rewarding.  But above all else t has been the learning experience of a lifetime to build, formulate and create a cutting edge skincare brand and see results n real time. As an entrepreneur, l continue to learn some powerful and challenging lessons along the way.

There is no set path to follow

Get comfortable with the uncertainty of the road ahead and get familiar with the feeling of going out on a limb.  The best companies are built on calculated trial and error – a series of smart mistakes that lead to breakthroughs and realizations.  This takes time and a lot of hard work, but it is worth it in the long run to find the playbook that is unique to your business and drives the results that you want.

Nothing is constant everything is cyclical

The only constant in life is change.  Every success feels so exhilarating and every blow you feel so incredibly deeply.  The key is to remember that even during the roughest most challenging times when you feel you want to give up and start questioning yourself is the exact moment you need to dig deeper than ever before because something big is just around the corner and this is the true test of separating a true entrepreneur from the wannabees.  As many successes as you have so you will have an equal amount of challenges and failures. That is the formula for success.  During my roughest times l have had my biggest revelations that have created opportunities l would never have created otherwise.

Entrepreneurship is lonely

Entrepreneurship is lonely. Nobody will know how hard you work at what you do. Nobody will give you the acknowledgment or the “pat on the back” you feel you deserve. Nobody will sit there, cheering you on, day in and day out. Nobody will take the fall when you mess up. Nobody will be able to tell you which direction is right or wrong. Entrepreneurship is lonely because, by definition, it means choosing to go your own way.

This took me a while to accept and emotionally address within myself. Not only will your efforts go unacknowledged by the majority of people in your life, but those who you thought would be your biggest supporters and have your back, sometimes disappointment you the most. This is one of the hardest, most brutal truths about entrepreneurship and you know what?  That is what you signed up for.  So, ignore the background noise and keep laser focused.

It’s all about people

I am very lucky to have a great team of people working with me. None of our success would be possible without them.  l am a great believer ln working with the right energies that inspire great ideas, aren’t afraid of hard work, long hours and having the end goal ln sight.

Perfection doesn’t exist

l always say, there is no such thing as perfection, but rather to aim for being the very best ln the world at what you do.  Always be prepared for that twist ln the road, be prepared for that deviation, there ls no such thing as the “perfect plan”.  Be flexible and focused on forward progress. When you are flexible you will be amazed at how much you learn. New ideas and trends crop up every day, allow your creativity and your mind to think big and be open and never allow yourself to be boxed into that “perfect plan.”

“Being an entrepreneur is my dream job, as it tests ones tenacity.” – Gautam Adani

If you could give advice to someone that wants to start their own business, what would it be?

lf you have a great idea and you have created a brand and product that provide a unique solution to a pain point you must have active and aggressive patience, everything takes time. Make sure you are the very best at what you do.  There is no magic, it will not happen overnight, there’s no instant gratification.  You have to have grit and stick. Allow time to do its work. Remain consistent always. Put in the time and eventually things will start happening. When you are making a change you have to expect it to be VERY difficult.  There’s also nothing more important than building your own personal brand because you are unique and can never be cloned.  It is the one competitive advantage you will always have. Yes, you will have to make giant sacrifices in all areas of your life. Yes it will be challenging.  Yes you will have sleepless nights with anxiety and sometimes even feel that you have hit rock bottom. But in spite of all of this NEVER EVER, EVER give up and NEVER EVER EVER doubt yourself.  Malcolm Gladwell popularised the idea that it takes 10 000 hours to master a complex skill. The real key to mastering a complex skill is grit – the ability to stick with something long enough to log those 10 000 hours. Gritty people pick something and stick with it.  They are tenacious, persevering and they absolutely refuse to give up.  They keep a laser focus on their goal and say, “no thanks” to anything that gets in their way.

What is the next step for the Oolala Collection?

We are currently working on maximising and improving the personalization and online shopping experience for our users based on data mining and making sure the entire experience is as seamless as possible.  In addition we are launching our OolalaSWEAT range and collaborating with likeminded brands to drive this campaign hard. (You will have to wait to hear more J).  All in all we are excited for what the future holds.

I believe that the quotes that stick by people are the quotes that tell us more about them. It’s like a little behind the scenes peek at their souls. Daniella chose a beautiful quote from Maya Angelou as her favourite, “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.

When you aren’t working what do you love to do?

I love to be outdoors, running half marathons, boxing or anything fitness related that gives me endorphins.  I am a huge animal lover and love taking Gavi my rescue Western Highland Terrier and Mischa my 12-year-old Labbie out on long beautiful walks and adventures.  Listening to a great podcast, binge watching an awesome series, and of course I’m a pure pamper girl. I could be pampered from head to toe all day, every day.

Who has inspired you and how?

After losing my dad at the age of 12 which was hugely traumatic for my family, my Mom has always taught me the importance of self-independence as she always had that herself.  Always having something to wake up and look forward to each and every day.  My Mom has taught me to believe in myself to never give up, never lose faith and to keep pushing forward tenaciously no matter how tough life can get.

I have a surprise…

Do you want to find out more about which product would be best for your skin or how Daniella made a success of the Oolala Collection? You can now send in your questions to editor@goddess.co.za and Daniella will answer it all on a Facebook Live Chat on my page!

As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month this August, Barbie and Blue Horizon Licensing (Blue Horizon) invite women – and girls – across the country to recognise the “sheroes” who inspire them.

It is often said that ‘You cannot be what you cannot see’. This phrase encapsulates the importance of positive role models, especially for young girls – because today’s girls are tomorrow’s women. And if we truly believe that the future is female, we must inspire today’s girls to be strong, to stand up and be counted, to dream big fat audacious dreams, to become anything that they want to be, and do anything that they want to do.

It is in this spirit, this Women’s Month, that Blue Horizon invites South African women and girls to join the conversation #MoreRoleModels, by nominating three women who have inspired them, and asking those women to do the same, in this way starting a movement that recognises and acknowledges the women across our country who have contributed, and continue to contribute, to shaping a world in which anything is possible.

“Although we at Blue Horizon Licensing believe that every day is Women’s Day, the official calendar month being August provides us with the perfect opportunity to celebrate women across South Africa, for who they are, how much they have achieved, and how they continue to contribute to the growth and development of this country,” says Lezelle Britz, Managing Director at Blue Horizon.

“It also provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on the challenges that women continue to face, and how each of us can contribute to the development of a more inclusive and less discriminatory world.”

With women in the spotlight this month, the Barbie brand seeks to inspire the next generation of South African women as it is a firm believer that ‘You Can Be Anything’.

“Over the past 60 years, Barbie has had over 180 careers, showing girls that they truly can be anything they want to be – from a fashion model to a fashion editor, an aerobics instructor, a ballerina, or a career gal, an Olympic athlete, a Marine Corps sergeant, firefighter or airline pilot, an astronaut and even president!” says Britz.

In March this year, the brand honoured a host of female role models who have broken boundaries in their fields and have been an inspiration to the next generation of girls with a one-of-a-kind doll made in their likeness. Global honorees included British boxer Nicola Adams, Australian conservationist Bindi Irwin, Italian soccer player Sara Gama, Polish journalist Martyna Wojciechowska, and French chef Helene Darroze.

On the local front, Blue Horizon is proud to announce a new partnership with kidswear and tween brand, SODA Bloc, which is kicking off in September with some strong female-focused messaging, where SODA Bloc and Blue Horizon will be enabling girls across South Africa to wear Barbie pink with pride.

In addition, bookstores across the country will be stocking up on the Barbie “You can be anything” series, while Toy Kingdom and Takealot are offering the Barbie STEM kit – an innovative science kit where girls can build 7 experiments and be guided by an accompanying book that shows them just how to build them.

“Barbie has helped shape the dreams of little girls for over half a century, showing them that anything is possible – if you can dream it, you can do it. We are proud to represent a brand that is shaping the future women of South Africa,” says Britz.
