I’ve struggled with the lockdown, the constant rising numbers in COVID-19 infections and deaths. The fact that we don’t have a garden because we wanted to have the penthouse life, travel and be out and about made sense – but being cooped up in a 180m2 space with kids that can’t go out enough… has really hurt us.  To top it off yesterday one of our neighbours yelled at us at 8:45 as we came up the stairs with giggling kids because apparently they effing wake him up every Sunday. (We’ve only been out 2 Sundays since lockdown level 4.) I kept my cool and told him to chill because kids will be kids, but just below the surface I wanted to yank him through his security gate and rip his limbs from his body. Going up against a parent that has had to endure what we have is maybe the worst idea this guy has ever had.

On a lighter note… The kids are wearing their masks during our morning walks and cycling time. In fact, when they see them in my hands they know we are going out and all you see is little bodies making a beeline for the door.

I’ve made a few masks for the kids and us, but I think I am proudest of my “colour your mask” with Sharpies invention. I think that was really out of the box thinking and a “I did it first”. Lexa loved doodling on it and I added some more black outlines afterwards. I plan on making her a few more as I found a stash of fabric that I never really knew what to do with because its white. One or two will obviously be Barbie-themed.

While trying out patterns and fabrics I’ve realized that T-shirt material (not the thinnest kind you get) work very well for kids with sports related activities. The 3-layer thin cotton ones also very comfortable and if you replace 1 layer with lining it keeps its shape much better.

I would love to see your self-made and bought masks.

If you want a few awesome patterns for masks you can find it on my pinterest board.

We used Sharpie Stained for fabric but fabric paint would also work.

It is no secret that I have been struggling with depression since we first heard my infertility diagnoses. Some days I barely want to get out of bed. Most days I don’t even want to see people anymore. I literally dread being around people and would rather sit in a corner staring at a dot on the wall.

I have been staying home most of the time (when not at work) and have realised that I hate the curtains, wall colours and even the livingroom. I have decided to start redoing the house interior to keep myself busy.

I have decided to DIY my home. First off I have chosen material to make scatter cushion covers. What do you think of the LOVE DOLL fabric? Then actually sat down and decided on colours for the house.

I loved the fabric so much that I bought a second colour combination! This is for our Joburg house.

I love neutral tones, but I want splashes of red just to brighten up here and there. In this case it will be the LOVE DOLL hearts. My chosen palette is a mixture of creams, browns and blues.

I also looked around the internet for some inspiration and really liked these:

This year I want to do a beautiful white Christmas tree with silver bells, red ornaments and nothing else. I wanted quick easy and not the old plastic tree, so off we went this weekend and found a dead tree with its branches ready to come home with us. Found the perfect branch that looked like a mini tree and drove on home with it.

At home hubby suggested I use the spray paint and so I did. Never worked with spray paint and did I pay…

I came down with a headache straight out of hell and could barely see and definitely not walk. Drank 2 headache tablets an still the headache persisted. I then decided to take a bath to wash of any of the poisonous fumes that may linger on my skin and hair. Thankfully this helped.

To add insult to injury, my dear hubby decided to get rid of everything that had spray paint on…now I still have no tree.

How to make your own white Christmas tree:

  1. Don’t use spray paint
  2. Get normal paint that needs to be applied with a paintbrush
  3. Get your perfect branch
  4. Attach branch to a footpiece
  5. or place it in a vase
  6. Voila – you have a tree to decorate
