There I was one day just flicking aimlessly through Instagram when I stumbled upon an artist’s profile. I stopped my aimlessness and went through every single picture on her account. I was so so fascinated by these “dolls” that I couldn’t help myself.

Who is the artist?

Her name is Manoushka and she is a Dutch national living in Durban for more than 6 years. She has 2 adorable daughters that inspire her.

Manoushka studied theater and was on stage in the Netherlands for 10 years – and then she came here. She was a product designer and recently resigned to focus on Noush Projects.

Noush Kraal artist

What does Manoushka Kraal make?

I want to describe the dolls as authentic African décor, but it’s not – because it’s so much more. These figurines capture African soul, colour, vibrancy, liveliness… but they are made so unexpectedly different.

Let’s start at the beginning. Manoushka was inspired by plastic Clonette dolls that you get in Europe, especially the Netherlands and France, but they are from Ghana. Clonette dolls were originally inspired by wooden African dolls, but lacked African flavour and features. So Manoushka, inspired by Clonette dolls, created her own doll with African features.

The first wooden doll was created 3 years ago and now there are 8 different resin casts.

You can still order a wooden original and it is available in different sizes. The resin casts also come in a range of different sizes, but each particular individual figurine comes in one size.

She also makes a mermaid plushie, Maria Mermaid, which I might add is the cutest thing after a kitten.

Noush Projects Maria Mermaid

The figures

Everybody has to draw inspiration from the people around them, so I had to ask if her little girls also gave her some ideas/inspiration.

“The bunny element comes directly from the plastic Clonette. My eight year old Hazel and her dear little friend Lily Rose love mermaids so that why I came to grow some a fish tail 🙂 And I’m so often inspired by my eight year olds drawings. I created for example a bear and bunny holding a tiny mermaid purely because of a drawing Hazel made.”

Naming and colouring your creations

Each doll range has a name, whatever the original wooden doll is named that is the name of the resin models. The names of the dolls include:

  • Maria Mermaid
  • Zodwa Mermaid
  • Thando
  • Turtle Anna
  • Skippy Sal
  • Koala Kate
  • Chrissie
  • Ginger Rose

The dolls are available in a range of colours from black, white, sage (the same colour as they have on their wall at home) mint green, light blue, turquoise, yellow or pink. Manoushka also encourages customers to have a doll painted the same colour as their walls – because the gold she adds will just make it pop.

The bestsellers

Each country or city has its own bestseller, but overall the mermaids are the most popular.

On expansion plans…

As with any small business, when you outsource, you pay more. On the other hand if you try to do it all yourself…

There might be more plushies soon, plus she has a couple of wooden originals lined up to make more moulds of.

…and she is working with Laurien Murphy on a brand called Perfect_Imperfect. They are currently working on a whole little range… so keep your eyes peeled!

So, where can you get your hands on them?

If you don’t see them at a shop you can order from her directly! Just drop Manoushka an email at noushkraal@gmail.com. She has a website, but it is still in the “tweaking stage (when there is time someday)” www.noush.co.za and you can also comment on Instagram on the item you want.

Village Secret ShoesAt Village Secrets shoes are designed and handcrafted and given a South African flair with Shweshwe fabric since April 2015 by Magda.

Village Secret shoes are available on HelloPretty, selected tourist focussed stores and ladies boutiques – as well as social media. Magda also mentioned that they are also experimenting with distribution through informal channels, providing an opportunity to ladies such as her helper, Emma, to supplement her income by selling in her community.  This mainly works on a lay buy basis, which means that it takes about two months to receive full payment, but that just makes it more authentically South African.

Are you supporting local?

Village Secrets uses a local cobbler to handcraft the shoes; Sources Shweswe fabric, suede leather, soles and laces from South Africa.

How did you choose the name?

“At the time we lived in the beautiful village of Irene in Centurion (in Villagers Lane nogal) and I thought it could be an enticing name, especially when launching new designs.”

How involved are you in the manufacturing process? Do you design/make it yourself – or import?

“Every aspect of our shoes are South African.  We believe in our country and all the beauty it has to offer.  I have an obsession with shweshwe fabric and we know that most women just love shoes!”

On expansion…

“We are fairly new but have big dreams to expand not only our local footprint, but also help other countries discover the ‘denim of South Africa’ in a functional and practical handcrafted shoe.”

Village Secrets may be still in its infancy, but Magda already thinks of the job opportunities she could create. She currently works with a cobbler that helps to bring the designs to life. The cobbler is paid a fair price for each pair he crafts and working with Village Secrets allows him the time to grow his own business and service his own customers as well.

“We’ve recently produced a super sexy wedge heel sandal in a range of shweshwe fabrics.  We have plans to expand our range of men’s shoes as well.”

What is your favourite Village Secrets product?

“I just love the fabric we use in the crafting of our shoes.  South African shweshwe has such a rich history that very few people are aware of.  Known as the ‘fabric that whispers’, shweshwe should take its rightful place as the ‘denim of South Africa’.  Zwelitsha in the Eastern Cape is probably the only place in the world where the traditional indigo dyed discharge printed fabric is manufactured. You can read more about it on my website.”

What has been the best-selling Village Secret product?

The ladies blue T bar sandal and flame orange lace up has been best-sellers at Village Secrets.

T Bar Blue Village Secrets Shoes Flaming Village Secrets Shoes

“We’ve also been blown away by the interest from men in our shoes.  I think people are wanting that something special, not mass produced.”

What is the must-have Village Secret shoe?

“For the coming ‘in-between’ weather you should stock up on pumps and lace ups. And ‘no’, we do not make black shoes.  Life is too short and life in South Africa is too colourful.”

What was the best advice you read/heard while building your brand?

“A piece of the puzzle find its place and you get that ‘oh yes!’ feeling.”

About the owner, Magda

One of the biggest obstacles faced by Magda was having a full-time job that didn’t allow for a lot of leave days to attend festivals, tradeshows and other opportunities to build the brand. This has now changed… Magda and her family moved to the the beautiful Garden Route. She has left the corporate world and focuses on Village Secrets and settling the family into a new environment.

“After years in the ‘charity’ sector’, it just is becoming very clear and urgent to me that we need to create opportunities for South Africans.  Charity is not sustainable and through the programme I was involved in during that time, I’ve worked with so many amazing social entrepreneurs who are finding solutions to our most pressing issues.  The secret of their success lies in collaboration, realising that we all have a role to play and that whether you are the designer or the cobbler, we all need each other to make it work.”

When you have a mind and talent like Liesl, magical things happen.

Fairy Caravan - LieslLiesl, a children’s book illustrator, started Fairy Caravan 5 years ago, but her inspiration comes from a trip to the library as a toddler and discovering Beatrix Potter’s works. When Liesl was looking for a name that would suit her business she once again turned to her favourite childhood author and a book named The Fairy Caravan.

Each doll, toy or décor item starts as an illustration on paper, which is then digitally printed onto (mostly) fabric with waterbased inks at a local printer in the Western Cape. These magical illustrations come to life as three-dimensional toys in the hands of seamstresses and Liesl.

Everything is local

When a product is truly made in South Africa you can trace the hands and people behind a product – and this makes it more special: Fairy Caravan sources it’s cotton fabrics locally; The seamstresses are also local and can work from home; The fabric printers are local; But the product is bringing joy to kids all over the world.

Liesl has her studio in the Western Cape where she draws, manufactures and keeps stock ready for shipment. Nowadays stories are also woven about the characters she creates (these will be available through a subscription service).

Imagine your child with their own beautiful fairy listening to the story of how she came to be. That would just be magical!

The creatures…

Making a maker choose their favourite item is always a hard question, but it also tells you just how passionate someone is about their own products when they struggle to choose. Liesl chose the Fairy Babies as her favourite product.

Fairy Caravan - Fairy babies

The Fairy Babies are simple baby dolls that are suitable for little girls to play with – and isn’t too delicate. The faces of the little Fairy Babies will appeal to girls even as they grow older.

“I put a lot of love into the drawings of the faces of these little babies!”

Fairy Babies are available in 2 sizes – perfect for home décor, special gifts and as a keepsake.

  • Larger Fairy Babies that will make you hug them
  • Mini Fairy Babies that will fit snugly into your hand and melt your heart

These magical little creatures have made their way across the world to the US, UK, Europe, Australia and even Russia already!

The best advice…

Liesl is inspired by Marie Forleo who said “Eveything is figureoutable”. Everytime she comes up against an obstacle, this serves as a reminder that she will overcome this too.

She also has some advice for others starting their own business:

“The best advice that I can offer is that growing a business takes time and perseverance and that one should not expect overnight success – or become despondent when things don’t happen as fast as you’d like. I have found that loving what I do and being passionate about my business have carried me through the tough times. The feeling of accomplishment when you start to taste success from something that you have worked very hard at is incredible and makes it all worth it.

There are also advantages to growing slowly – for example, I have been able to fine-tune the kind of products that I make. I started out focusing on children’s room decor, and would probably not have started making dolls and toys (that I now find more creatively satisfying to design and make) if I experienced overwhelming success designing linen and wall stickers for children’s rooms.”

On expansion and obstacles…

2017 is the year of stories and becoming a household name in South Africa. Last year 11 new characters were added to the Fairy Caravan family.

“I have always wanted to have my illustrations printed on fabric, but for a long time I couldn’t find a fabric printer that was a good fit for what I needed. I met with many potential service providers, but they were either very expensive or required large minimum orders, which I couldn’t commit to as a fledgling business.

I don’t know what made me persevere in trying to find a fabric printer that was a good fit for what I wanted to create, but I’m glad that I did, and that I ended up finding someone whom I love working with, because today most of my products are made from printed fabric and I love creating with fabric.

As with most small business owners I am constantly battling the catch-22 situation of needing more employees to be able to grow, but not being able to afford paying someone’s salary just yet. I have been able to overcome this problem by rather taking on part-time workers to complete piecework for me. It is important to me that I pay a decent wage for work that I ask someone to do for me, so I feel that if I can’t pay a decent salary just yet, I can at least pay a decent hourly fee for part-time work.”

The people that surround you…

Liesl is married to her soulmate, James, who is also an entrepreneur. The rest of the troupe is made up of Ophelia, the cat, that makes sure that eating and sleeping is a priority and Charlie, a border collie, who loves long walks in the park and playtime.

As a dedicated business owner spending time with friends, swopping stories on life, work and business over tea is one of the best luxuries.

I admire people that follow their dreams and create flourishing businesses like Liesl and her Fairy Caravan. I can only hope that this illustrator will publish books I can give to Charlotte, because her work is so unique and wonderful and I would love my kid/s to have a world of beautiful creatures and magical fairies.

Since 2013 Cotton Candyfloss has been one of the go-to online retailers for locally designed and produced gifts for babies and toddlers. Making it the place to shop for baby showers / 1st birthdays or any other special occasions – and delivered nationwide via courier.

Cotton Candyfloss is all about ‘supporting local’/ ‘Local is lekker’.

Litza has her hand in the design of all the items on her shop and makes some of the items herself – but she also outsources to local companies and other entrepreneurs – who in turn also source local materials.

Still growing

In the beginning finding suppliers who would work with a ‘young company’ and supply small quantities was one of the obstacles – but when you are a small business, you are just that more determined.

Cotton Candyfloss as an online business relies a lot on Facebook marketing, bloggers writing reviews and mommy groups to create awareness. As a budding business, expansion is always top of mind. First on the cards is a showroom, building a loyal local customer base and also working/planning towards getting products into the international market.

About the products

One of the best-selling products from Cotton Candyfloss has been the sibling T-shirts / baby grows – Little Brother/ Big Brother and Lil Sister/ Big Sister.

Another product that is very popular is the Milestone Blackboard. It grows with kids and can be used as a photo prop or room décor item – and is great for recording milestones.

In the media

Cotton Candyfloss was featured on You, baby & I , Joburg Darling,  Rattle & Mum. Some products were featured in magazines: Joburg Style, Your Baby, Baba & Kleuter.

Sage advice from someone who has been there

Don’t rely on just one supplier. Have ‘backup suppliers’ who you can turn to when one can’t help you.

  • Mistakes in business can be costly, but it’s good to make a few as it helps you learn more about yourself and your business’s limitations, and you make sure you don’t repeat those mistakes.
  • Learn not to take things personally. Accept criticism and use it to better your business.
  • Customer Services is KEY!

How the name Cotton Candyfloss came about

It is always interesting to learn how business owners decided on the names of their companies. Litza wanted something that was sweet, fun and memorable. Since most baby things are pretty, pink and made of cotton, she decided on Cotton Candyfloss.

About Litza

Litza is a mom of a toddler and baby – with 2 furry kids on the way (kitten and puppy). When she isn’t working on Cotton Candyfloss she enjoys food and craft markets, sampling new things, baking and afternoon teas.

She used to be an accountant in London, but on her return to South Africa she yearned for a lifestyle that would allow her to stay at home with the kids. This gave her the time and inspiration to start Cotton Candyfloss.

I believe in supporting local businesses. If I had to choose between that Made in China vs Made in SA label the choice is quite easy…

I discovered Find the Stoke in Salt Rock a couple of months ago and decided to hang onto writing about them until I learnt a little more about the people behind the brand. So I contacted Deon, the owner, and asked him to introduce his surf label to a bunch of bloggers in Durban and then I popped into the store for a follow-up chat.

When you sit and talk to Deon about Find the Stoke he literally bursts with pride. For him it is not just a mass produced surf clothing line, it is his passion.

Deon and his whole family are involved in the design of the images used on the clothing. They have a CMT (Cut, Make & Trim) person right here in Salt Rock. They print it in Salt Rock. The shop with attached coffee shop is right around the corner from Salt Rock Beach (wedged between the Caltex, Salt Rock Hotel & Salt Rock Country Club at the Coffee Bay Shopping Centre).

The brand is authentically Salt Rock with some of the prints only available to locals on pre-order. When you buy a Find the Stoke garment you will never be one of thousands wearing the same T-shirt. You will be one of ten – maybe. (That makes me want to be on that VIP list more – I do not like being excluded…)

Find the Stoke is all about limited edition garments made with good quality fabrics. They are an authentic brand with roots in their community.

Interesting facts about Find the Stoke

  • They were established in 2015.
  • Find the Stoke was almost called Tower 13, the radio calling sign for the lifesaving tower in Salt Rock.
  • All garments are limited edition.

You can get your coffee while you browse at the Coffee Bay Coffee & Surf Shop.
