I know it sounds selfish, but I don’t want my BFF to do a reverse Great Trek on me. Cape Town is far and I’ve been there a few times – it’s not as special as a trip to the Kruger or standing on the mountains of Magoebaskloof. Here are 5 reasons why you will miss Jozi:

“Like love, breakfast is best when made at home.” – Gina Barreca

The most obvious reason is, me. We have been BFFs for 11 years and well, I don’t really go to Cape Town as flights are expensive, I can’t take my cats and my life has a triangle with Jozi, Salt Rock and somewhere in the mountains near Haenertsburg.

In Jozi you know what to expect with cold winters, warm summers and late afternoon showers. In Cape Town… there is that irritating wind that can blow for days.

In Jozi you are close to the family – literally –  with parents just an hour away and extended family just one door down in KZN.

It’s a culture thing… Slow Town may be beautiful, but everything seems to happen so slow down that side – think KZN on slow-slo-mo. I know you like wine, but isn’t it best shared from a hip flask than all hoity-toity?

And lastly, those waters are cold. Unless you are in a full-body wetsuit you can kiss a long swim in the sea goodbye. Plus in Jozi you can hop on over to Sun City or trek to KZN for a nice warm swim.

…if you do go, my BFF, just remember that Jozi will always be here with open arms.

A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others. Frank Morgan

It has been more than a year since I left “corporate life”. I won’t lie, it was a big decision to make – I have bills for fertility treatments, bonds, groceries, levies and utilities to pay. Then I realised that staying would mean selling my soul, aging prematurely and just be unhappy every single day.

I jumped. It felt like forever before my feet hit something solid and I didn’t have to dip into my savings anymore. Thank goodness that I am frugal and squirreled away money. Some days I barely touch ground as I’m that busy – and other days I can stop and take a breather. It’s a more balanced life with a whole lot less stress – seriously.

Another advantage is that I choose my work uniform – with no clause in my contract that excludes certain items of clothing… or dyeing my hair pink (I am doing it this year – you just watch). I now wear bootleg jeans with everything from sneakers to beautifully locally handmade shoes mixed in with jewellery that I collected over the years.

Recently I ventured out to a meeting with a potential client and wore this. It’s not always about what you wear – it’s about feeling comfortable and being confident. Clients trust people that they relate to – and they sign projects.

Wearing Tsonga, Miladys and Pick n Pay

  • Laptop bag and shoes from Tsonga (made in South Africa)
I don’t wear heels anymore as I have quite a bad knee injury, but the height on these are just perfect and I don’t have any pain at the end of the day.
  • Bootleg jeans from Miladys
I never used to shop at Miladys but suddenly they have the most amazing jeans…
  • Black T-shirt from Pick n Pay (made in South Africa)
I love these “not made in China” T’s that actually fit around my shoulders that has a little extra length to get down to my hips.

Albany Bakeries aims to feed 5 million hungry children in Mzansi!

Committed to spreading the spirit of Ubuntu, Albany Bakeries, one of South Africa’s award-winning brands in the Sunday Times Top Brand Awards, is celebrating school children returning to the classroom with the “5 Million Meals” campaign, running up until 11 February 2018. In partnership with the Shoprite Mobile Soup Kitchen, the campaign aims to deliver five million meals to underprivileged children across South Africa.

“We are committed to improving the lives of vulnerable school children and their communities by focusing on nutritional and educational enhancement,” says Albany Bakeries Marketing Manager Pondo Belot.

Hunger, poor quality food and education continue to plague South Africa’s children. Recently, the Annual South African Child Gauge reported that about 53 children under the age of five die in South Africa every day — and three-quarters of them do not live to see their first birthday. Malnutrition doesn’t only threaten children’s survival, it undermines their ability to thrive and achieve their full potential. In 2018, Albany Bakeries is reaching out to citizens across the country to join hands in making a difference.

Mzansi has the ability to help hungry children achieve their dreams, but it all starts with a nutritional meal to help them concentrate at school.  For every loaf of Albany Superior and Everyday bread purchased during the campaign at SPAR, Shoprite Checkers, Pick n Pay and spaza shops, a child in need will be fed and given a fresh and healthy start. Added to this, consumers stand a chance to help a school win R10 000 in cash towards a nutritional and/or feeding scheme. In total 50 schools across South Africa will benefit from Albany Bakeries generosity.

True to the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child”, apart from fulfilling the dream to deliver  five million meals, Albany Bakeries is in partnership with LoveToGive, a non-for profit organisation that feeds 2300 malnourished and hungry children, while empowering unemployed women with skills training, mentorship and monthly food parcels.

Together with Albany, the NGO currently provides a nutritious filling meal every morning to disadvantaged children to ensure they don’t go to school hungry. To date, 63 699 learners from impoverished communities across the country have been provided with a hot, nutritious breakfast every day.

For the past three years, Albany Bakeries has also been involved in a feeding scheme with Shoprite’s Mobile Soup Kitchen providing a nutritional meal of soup and Albany bread to more than 300 000 South Africans in need every month.

With malnutrition a major underlying cause of death in 64% of South Africa’s children under the age of five, as reported by Unicef South Africa, food and nutrition are an essential element in the prevention of this growing epidemic. Bread is a staple food that provides carbohydrates, the energy provider that both fills a child’s stomach and keeps them fuelled for longer. Filled with nutritious benefits and fortified with vitamins and minerals, bread prevents energy ‘highs and lows’ and sustains energy for much longer.

Help improve a child’s wellbeing by purchasing a loaf of Albany bread at your local Spar, Shoprite Checkers, Pick n Pay and spaza shops.

I can only imagine the last few days before “back-to-school”… for parents. As a kid my parents made us go outside or play board games until we just left them alone, fell asleep or found something else to do. My favourite game was always Monopoly – unless playing with my sister… because I’m sure she cheated (she always played the banker)!

The next generation MONOPOLY game featuring the newly selected token set is now also available in-store.

Monopoly Set

Earlier in the year fans from around the globe were invited to vote to keep their favourite token on the board. The campaign drew over 4.3 million fan votes and the eight tokens set to “pass GO” in the next generation of the MONOPOLY game include:

  • Scottie Dog Token: The best friend of Mr. MONOPOLY since the 1950s, the Scottie Dog token proved its popularity by receiving the most votes – making it the overall first place winner.
  • T-Rex Token: The mighty T-Rex token stomped its way into the new game, garnering the second most overall votes and making history as the first dinosaur token of Mr. MONOPOLY.
  • Top Hat Token: Coming in third place in overall votes, the Top Hat token – a staple in the game since 1935 – will keep Mr. MONOPOLY looking dapper well into the future.
  • Car Token: This 1930s roadster will continue fueling adrenaline rushes for Mr. MONOPOLY in the next generation of the game; coming in fourth place in overall votes.
  • Rubber Ducky Token: Coming in fifth in overall votes, the new Rubber Ducky token is truly all its “quacked” up to be.
  • Cat Token: Fans voted the Cat token into the game in 2013, and she clawed her way back in as one of the eight winning tokens, coming in sixth place in overall votes.
  • Penguin Token: Waddling into the game in seventh place in overall votes, the Penguin token is the new style muse for Mr. MONOPOLY.
  • Battleship Token: The beloved Battleship token represents the first round-the-world trip for Mr. MONOPOLY; securing the eighth spot in overall votes, this token’s legacy will cruise into the next generation of the game.

The latest edition to the MONOPOLY fold, MONOPOLY GAMER, is the MONOPOLY game with a Nintendo twist. Featuring special power-ups and Super Mario characters, MONOPOLY GAMER introduces beloved Nintendo characters and new twists to the MONOPOLY game.

Monopoly Gamer Set

MONOPOLY GAMER will feel familiar yet fresh to both MONOPOLY and Nintendo fans, as player’s race around the board to complete levels (buy property), collect coins (money) – either from the bank or by using special powers to take them from other players – and battle legendary bosses to rack up points and win the game. Players can choose from fan-favorite Super Mario character tokens, such as Mario, Donkey Kong, Princess Peach and Yoshi.

For the first time in MONOPOLY history, each character token will have its own unique power-up ability, introducing another layer of strategy for new and old players alike. For example, landing on the Super Star board space will activate Princess Peach’s Super Star ability to collect rent from the bank. Players can also activate a special power-up boost by rolling the power-up die.

Fans can take their MONOPOLY GAMER experience to the next level with the purchase of MONOPOLY GAMER POWER PACKS (each sold separately), which include one of several Super Mario character tokens like Luigi, Boo, Rosalina, Wario, Diddy Kong and more.

The MONOPOLY brand has been a staple in the gaming aisle for more than 80 years, and now Mario, Yoshi and other characters will have the chance to bring their powers to life in MONOPOLY GAMER Edition game.

The latest MONOPOLY games from Hasbro Gaming are available from Toys R Us, ToyZone, Toy Kingdom, Hamleys, Lilliputs and other major retailers. You can also shop online at Takealot.com

MONOPOLY is the world’s favourite family game brand and is enjoyed by more than 1 billion players in 114 countries across the globe. MONOPOLY tokens have been a key element of the game since it was introduced in 1935.

I have a challenge for each and every person that reads this post – including all South African bloggers.

As a farmer you are responsible for your family, your workers and the livestock. You know your workers’ mother/father/child/brother/sister/cousin and you work side by side in the fields, with the livestock. Both you and your workers know the animals by name, you raise them, they are real living beings to you.

Imagine you are a farmer in the drought-stricken Cape region right now

The drought has wiped out your bank account. You have no income. You start cutting costs. Eventually you have to let go of a worker that has been next to you for years. You know that you are taking away this person’s livelihood and that they won’t be able to support their family. It breaks your heart.

Then there is nothing left. You can’t buy feed for your livestock. They wither away in front of your eyes, they slowly and painfully starve. You have to look your hungry animals in the eye while being merciful to the dying animal in front of you. They die in droves. It breaks your heart. It breaks your soul.

You’re not even sure how you are going to feed your own family. You don’t even have money to keep the kids in school. The kids won’t be getting a Christmas present. It just breaks you completely.

Imagine if you could do something…

I have been crying like a crazy person while watching the footage on the Droogtehulp met Burre Burger Facebook page. Keep in mind that I don’t know these people but I can relate, because I grew up on a farm.

I first donated a little bit of money, but it has kept me awake at night thinking of the situation my fellow South Africans are in. Right now there are people that have lost everything – this includes the farmers, farmworkers (and families) and the surrounding communities – and obviously all the cattle, sheep, farm dogs, cats…

There was one particular story that was so heart-breaking that I could not sleep last night. The farmers were tasked with checking up on their neighbours and one lady came back with this… They thought the neighbouring farm was abandoned, dead and dying animals everywhere, no movement. Then however they spotted movement in the caravan where the farmer had moved into. He had nothing. He was broken. A later clip showed two big farmers delivering some food and necessities, they were overcome with emotion. They pointed out that there was a dying lamb under the caravan. They were there to help, but yet they were also too late… There wasn’t a clip on the farmer discovering the goods – and I’m still thinking about that.

So what can you do?

Can you (or someone you know) spare R10, R100 or R1000? Go to www.droogtehulp.co.za/en and get the banking details to deposit what you can spare. Now turn to your friend, your brother, your colleague and challenge them to match your donation.

If you are a blogger – please create a post on this very important cause, share this post on your Facebook, Twitter… Inspire others, donate.

Drought isn’t pretty, I have seen it, I have lived it, so when somebody asks that I share something that could alleviate the strain of the water crisis in the Cape… I am there. Just like in my newsletter (that went out yesterday) I am begging that we all do something amazing this Christmas for our fellow South Africans.

Siemens AirDrop is conducting a social experiment.

Flying to Cape Town? Travellers encouraged to swop baggage allowance for water from Jozi #SiemensAirdrop

The annual festive season trek from Jo’burg to the sunny shores of Cape Town is gathering steam, but this year Gautengers will descend on a drought ravaged city and their presence will put even more strain on the dwindling water supply.

To help raise awareness about the need to use water extremely sparingly in the Cape, on Friday 15 December Gautengers will be encouraged to participate in a social experiment and exchange five kilos of their on-flight baggage allowance for five litres of water.

VOUCHER BASED SYSTEM FOR SIEMENS SOCIAL EXPERIMENT

Siemens would like to clarify that the AirDrop experiment taking place on Friday 15 December is based on a voucher system and that passengers will not physically be checking in water when the fly from Johannesburg to Cape Town. Siemens AirDrop is a one-day social experiment to create awareness and see how quickly we can get 5 Tonnes of water from Jozi to CT using flights that are already scheduled. For the purposes of this experiment Siemens is using a voucher system: passengers with enough unused (5kg or more) luggage will receive a voucher – not a five-litre bottle of water. It is on a first come first serve basis, there are 1000 vouchers available. Siemens has pre-transported the water to Cape Town, and when passengers arrive they can either collect their water to use whilst in Cape Town, or Siemens will donate the water to Gift of the Givers. This is a social experiment to see what is possible, not a call to action.

Cape Town is in the throes of its worst drought in more than 100 years, with dam levels at around 35% and ‘day zero’ – when the city runs out of water completely – is predicted for late April 2018. Keshin Govender, Head of Communications for Siemens Southern and Eastern Africa, says the severity of the crisis inspired them to do something. “Every year Gautengers go to Cape Town for their holidays. If you consider that the daily per person water allocation is 87 litres, this places tremendous additional strain on the city.”

During a one-day activation at OR Tambo and Cape Town International airports, travellers can participate by having their luggage weighed at the Siemens AirDrop stand, located in the check-in hall opposite the self-service check-in counters (directly next to ACSA Info Desk at OR Tambo). Any travellers whose luggage is five (or more) kilos under the weight limit will be able to ‘exchange’ their unused kilograms for litres of water that will be delivered to Cape Town on their behalf.

“By simply exchanging unused luggage kilos for water, we hope to ‘airlift’ around 5000 litres (5 Tonnes) of drinking water to the city in a matter of hours. It is this kind of ingenuity that has made us a global leader in intelligent water management.” says Govender.

The flight route between Johannesburg and Cape Town is one of the busiest in the world, with over 4.4 million passengers flying it every year. Many passengers don’t use their full baggage allowance (ranging from 23 to 32 kilograms, depending on the airline). Business travellers often only take carry-on luggage, and even some holidaymakers pack light in order to do some shopping down in the Cape.

Upon arrival in Cape Town, passengers can either collect their guilt-free Jozi water to use during their stay, or they can opt to leave it at the collection point at Cape Town International Airport. The AirDrop collection stand will be in the arrivals area, opposite Woolworths. Uncollected water will be donated to Gift of the Givers.

The Siemens AirDrop illustrates the constant need for new and innovative solutions. “Only through ingenuity can we overcome the constraints of outdated and wasteful methods. AirDrop is an example of what can be accomplished if we apply this type of thinking to all industries across the country,” says Govender. Siemens has numerous intelligent systems in the water industry that make better use of energy, avoid unnecessary water losses and minimize the consumption of resources.

Govender says the Siemens AirDrop is a good example of how South Africans can do something for fellow citizens.

CityKidz Pre & Primary School in Joburg Friday 1 Dec took delivery of 15 double-seater school desks made from recycled plastic. The desks were pledged by Extrupet, PETCO and AKRARA as part of the Joburg City Clean-up earlier this year.

The 15 double-seater desks, manufactured by Extruwood, weigh 68kgs each and can comfortably seat a classroom of 30 learners. Donated by Extrupet, Africa’s leading PET and HDPE bottle recycling company, PETCO, the PET plastic recycling company of South Africa, and Ashith Sodha of AKRARA, the desks – which look and feel like wood – are manufactured from the caps and labels of plastic bottles (that are recycled at Extrupet), and are virtually indestructible while being comfortable, low maintenance, durable, and portable. It is estimated that throughout South Africa, there is a shortage of approximately 300 000 school desks.

‘These desks meet a real need within the schools, but also demonstrate the importance of sustainable waste management, while highlighting the great value that exists in so-called ‘waste’ materials within a circular economy.’ Adds Janine Basson, Stakeholder Relations Manager for PETCO, “PETCO believes that schools are a critical platform for promoting understanding of important waste management principles, such as recycling, amongst young people and their homes. This is why we are so proud to be making this donation,’ says Chandru Wadhwani, Joint Managing Director for Extrupet.

Wadhwani and Basson are optimistic that other corporates will respond positively to this call for desks within schools, as well as citizens like Ashith who look for sustainable solutions when giving back to the community.

Concludes Wadhwani, ‘Other corporates can make a real and practical contribution to our children’s education and our transition to a circular economy in South Africa by simply donating desks like these to schools. We challenge Corporate South Africa to match or exceed these donations’.

This is my day by day diary of how I am coping with a 5 day juice, smoothie and soup detox.

Day 1 of the Detox

I can do this! Loving the ginger shots, juices and smoothies for the day… soup one is where the trouble starts.

Oh my soul I cannot get this pumpkin & sweet potato soup down. My taste buds are not happy. It takes an hour to force it down.

By 5pm I am ravenous. I want something substantial. I need it! I barely make it to the 7pm soup. I barely make it to bed…

Day 2 of the Detox

Started the day with an organic peppermint, fennel and rose tea – it tasted like toothpaste.

The first smoothing of the day is called Evergreen, it just doesn’t want to go down. I keep in drinking and drinking and… it just doesn’t finish.

I got through the Swizz and Recharge smoothies, they were quite nice. Then it was a tomato soup… why am I being punished? I don’t like tomato soup at the best of times and now this…

I have also constantly chewed on a pencil today. I cannot stop thinking of a roll with crisps. I am hungry all the time time!

Day 3 of the Detox

I woke up hungry, stomach angrily growling. The mint, rose and fennel tea tastes worse today. I washed away the taste with the ginger shot… which I really like.

The smoothies went down easily, but I struggled with the soup. However, I wasn’t hungry today.

Weighed myself this morning and I lost a kilogram, it feels like my cheeks are sucking themselves in.

Day 4 of the Detox

I’m not hungry and had tea that smelled like pancakes. I didn’t like it.

First smoothie went down like chocolate. The rest was all downhill.

Day 5 of the Detox

I’m OK with my morning smoothies, but then it gets to be soup time and all I can think about is… solid food that will crunch.

By dinner I am quite full still.

First day after detox

  • Lost 1.5kg.
  • I’m not really hungry for breakfast, but eat toast and egg anyway.
  • I would actually do this again – maybe just not the soup.
  • I really liked most of the juices and smoothies.
