Have you ever had such a bad day that you stuffed your face with anything within reach – and the next day you have a breakout of note? It still happens to me!

The times I have a product to test that will address my skin problems, I am happiest. Previously I have written about BaoCare Radiance and its quick “rejuvenation” of my skin and today I’m talking acne/zits/karbonkels/the eew stuff.

I know the power of baobab oil, but when it is combined with tea tree, calendula and evening primrose you have a host of anti-microbial properties in one concentrated product. BaoCare Acne contains high levels of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid used in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins which in turn sends chemical signals that summon white blood cells (Source: Wikipedia) that helps to balance sebum (icky stuff) production. I sound pretty smart now, right?

BaoCare Acne has a pleasant, soft fragrance and is gentle on the skin. For best results I would recommend applying it twice daily after cleansing. Because it contains tea tree oil, avoid sensitive skin around the eyes.

Is it worth the buy?

Yes! I would never hesitate in recommending BaoCare products. They even have it in a small 10ml size if you would like to first try a little before spending the big bucks.

My breakout (which can turn really ugly) subsided within 24 hours. I’m still treating it with BaoCare Acne to have no return breakouts.

This part of the review talks about the creams, (s00n the acne treatment) and face mask. You can read part 1 of the Oolala Collection review here.

Oolala Collection Day Moisturiser with SPF15

The most important things I look for in my day cream is that it should have an SPF, get absorbed into my skin and be a good companion for my make-up.

The Oolala Collection day cream has a nice consistency that doesn’t linger on your skin after application. After about 20 minutes I saw an improvement of fine lines around my eyes.

The day cream is suitable for all skin types and is unisex.

Oolala Collection Hyaluronic Serum Moisture Boost Day

I loved this serum! It is packed with oils such as grape seed, sweet almond, jojoba and tea tree and yet it feels so light on my skin. It makes a huge difference to how my skin looks and feels.

I applied the Hyaluronic serum and gave it 5 to 10 minutes and then applied the day cream over it. You can use it as a standalone product from any other Oolala products as it is still effective under any other day cream.

Just a note on the oils… if you look at what each of the oils do on their own you have an antioxidant from the grape seed oil that will fight free radicals (that causes premature aging) and jojoba which is a moisturiser. Check out the ingredients in Oolala’s products – because that is what sets it apart from other skincare products.

Oolala Collection Colloidal Silt Ultra Mud Mask

This is going to be the shortest ingredient list you’ve ever seen… water and silt. That’s it. However there are trace minerals including colloidal silver, calcium, magnesium, iodine and boron in the silt. I think the colour of the mask is mostly derived from the iodine… and no, it doesn’t stain your face.

I didn’t check out the ingredient list before applying on my face – and it turns out that I have an allergic reaction to iodine. It is still a great product, it’s just sensitive skin problems 🙁

I used the hyaluronic serum to get the inflammation under control.

My neighbour tried it out, she loved the Silt Mud Mask and had no negative reaction to it.

…and I’m still waiting for the review from a new contributor to my blog, but will update as soon as I have it 🙂 She and her dad is reviewing a product each for me.

Do you have any questions about your skin and which Oolala Collection products Daniella would recommend?

I get quite a bit of products that come across my desk and I try to share my thoughts as honestly as possible. This time around I got to test out a whole load of Oolala Collection’s skincare products.

My skin

I have a sensitive skin that is almost the colour of porcelain. (Think, the lightest foundation… but lighter.) In winter I struggle with dry patches, have a bit of sun damage and I’m petrified of fine lines and wrinkles.

The Oolala Collection products I’ve tried…

Hyaluronic Oil Moisture Boost Night

This serum is packed with oils! I used it 3 times a week to get rid of my winter dry patches – and it worked! Since I sometimes don’t leave the house, I would do the treatment will sitting at my desk instead of at night.

The only thing I could complain about is that it has quite a strong scent, but it is to be expected with tea tree oil as one of its ingredients.

I didn’t have any of the other products whilst using this, but the website notes that you should alternate with the SkinESSENTIALS Night Moisturiser for best results.

In this product you will find ingredients such as grape seed oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil and tea tree oil (there is more). I already have most of these oils at home to mix into my shampoo/conditioner, so I know that they are excellent.

Gentle Apricot Kernel Scrub

This was probably my favourite product from the collection! It smells divine, plus it feels more like a cream with a slight texture. I could actually imagine being at a spa having a facial with this.

After using the Apricot Kernel Scrub, my skin felt extremely soft. I wish this was an all-day-every-day cream! If you get nothing else from Oolala, get this.

Radiance Repair Serum

This little tester was packed with surprise. I do have some sun damage and pigmentation and decided to whack it onto a patch on my lower jaw line (I should’ve take a photo).

The patch is a bit lighter now, but it could also be because of the mixture of products I used. I also applied some of this serum onto a particularly nasty cat scratch on my hand and the redness subsided very quickly.

Once again, it is packed with extracts from natural ingredients like arnica, cucumber, elder tree, ivy and more.

2in1 Deep Facial Cleanser With Toner – Alcohol Free

This is everything you want your facial cleanser to be. It is alcohol free and has a toner to get rid of excess oil, dirt and dead cells. It feels like a gel, but not as gross, and it doesn’t make foam.

One thing I have noticed is that my pores seem to “look a little less prominent” after using this morning and night for about a week.

This is one of the cheaper products from Oolala Collection, but I think that it is worth it for how it made my skin look and feel.

Do you have any questions about your skin and which Oolala Collection products Daniella would recommend?

Next part of the review…

This will contain reviews about the cream and zit care (from a teenager). Plus I will let you know if the day cream messed with my make-up or not!

I like to think people come to my blog(s) for more than the perfume sale dates, but as soon as the sale ends, I get asked when the next one is happening. I love that!

If you don’t know, I run another blog called Everything4Less where I try to share as much info I can on bargain shopping opportunities. There is almost nothing that can make me happier than finding a gem at a great price at a factory shop. Like girl, I have so many labels – but I got them from factory shops.

My BFF moved to Cape Town (getting angry all over again) so she will be my chauffeur in her Beamer for all my factory shopping requirements. You will see me coming, big sunglasses, scarve on the hair and car top down.

Let me not bore you and get to the point, I begged for dates about the perfume sale… and here it is 🙂

The perfume sale is open to the public from the 24th to 28th of October 2018.

The sale times are usually this, but I will confirm it closer to the time again as well.

  • Wednesday @ 11h00 – 18h00
  • Thursday @ 08h00 – 18h00
  • Friday @ 08h00 – 18h00
  • Saturday @ 08h00 – 16h00
  • Sunday @ 08h00 – 13h00

The rules at this sale:

Visa and Mastercard accepted. No cheques, AMEX or Diners Club. No handbags allowed. Right of admission reserved.

Where in Johannesburg is the fragrance sale happening?

I recently wrote about ‘Finding the Oolala in skincare’ and now you’ll get to meet the owner of this South African skincare range.

Who is…?

Daniella Shapiro is the founder of the Oolala Collection Club; She is also a speaker and marketing expert with her own consultancy; And made the watch list of top 50 SA business women to watch earlier this year.

Once upon a time she also chased success in the corporate world until she realised that burning out shouldn’t be the price to pay for accomplishment and success. She freed herself from this oh so familiar mindset that most of us get trapped in and strategically thought about how she can create a future where she can make a difference in her own unique way.

“…there is a great deal to gain from freeing yourself of the collective delusion that burning out is the necessary price for accomplishment and success.”

What does it take to start your own skincare collection?

To start your own skincare collection takes buckets of determination. It’s a process where you have to invest in research and development, branding and marketing of your product. Coming up with the concept that would establish your brand as a serious player in a market that is overcrowded – and this is where Daniella’s expertise came in handy.

As with any business idea she had to do her homework before jumping in, but once she knew that her vision was possible she made no excuses and rolled with it. Not only did Daniella find a niche market, but she also found a way to make her products unique.

With the Oolala Collection Daniella chose to think outside of the gender box and created a unisex skincare range that is ethical. The Oolala Collection is also backed by Beauty Without Cruelty and VeganSA – with the added bonus of no excess packaging to add to landfills.

On Daniella’s journey she has learnt that there is no set path to success and that sometimes you just have to go out on a limb; take calculated risks and learn from mistakes. There will also not be a pat on the back when you get it right, but you do have to celebrate the victories with the team that is with you in the trenches.

“New ideas and trends crop up every day, allow your creativity and your mind to think big and be open and never allow yourself to be boxed into that “perfect plan”.

At Oolala there is never a moment where the user experience (on their online shop) isn’t in a cycle of improvement and there is never a moment where there isn’t an idea that needs to be tested. You can also read about the new OolalaSWEAT range below…

Asking people what they do when they aren’t working is one of my favourite questions and Daniella as a typical type A personality did not disappoint! She is into fitness and adventures with her sidekicks Gavi and Mischa; but also enjoys a good pampering and bingeing on series.

PS. When you get to the end of this article I have a surprise 🙂

And then as per usual I like to leave in part of an interview in their own words to capture their real thoughts without my own opinion weaved in.

“A person who sees a problem is a human being; a person who finds a solution is visionary; and the person who goes out and does something about it is an entrepreneur.” – Naveen Jain

What is the most valuable lessons you learnt along the way?

Starting your own business is exciting, exhausting, frustrating, challenging, eye opening and rewarding.  But above all else t has been the learning experience of a lifetime to build, formulate and create a cutting edge skincare brand and see results n real time. As an entrepreneur, l continue to learn some powerful and challenging lessons along the way.

There is no set path to follow

Get comfortable with the uncertainty of the road ahead and get familiar with the feeling of going out on a limb.  The best companies are built on calculated trial and error – a series of smart mistakes that lead to breakthroughs and realizations.  This takes time and a lot of hard work, but it is worth it in the long run to find the playbook that is unique to your business and drives the results that you want.

Nothing is constant everything is cyclical

The only constant in life is change.  Every success feels so exhilarating and every blow you feel so incredibly deeply.  The key is to remember that even during the roughest most challenging times when you feel you want to give up and start questioning yourself is the exact moment you need to dig deeper than ever before because something big is just around the corner and this is the true test of separating a true entrepreneur from the wannabees.  As many successes as you have so you will have an equal amount of challenges and failures. That is the formula for success.  During my roughest times l have had my biggest revelations that have created opportunities l would never have created otherwise.

Entrepreneurship is lonely

Entrepreneurship is lonely. Nobody will know how hard you work at what you do. Nobody will give you the acknowledgment or the “pat on the back” you feel you deserve. Nobody will sit there, cheering you on, day in and day out. Nobody will take the fall when you mess up. Nobody will be able to tell you which direction is right or wrong. Entrepreneurship is lonely because, by definition, it means choosing to go your own way.

This took me a while to accept and emotionally address within myself. Not only will your efforts go unacknowledged by the majority of people in your life, but those who you thought would be your biggest supporters and have your back, sometimes disappointment you the most. This is one of the hardest, most brutal truths about entrepreneurship and you know what?  That is what you signed up for.  So, ignore the background noise and keep laser focused.

It’s all about people

I am very lucky to have a great team of people working with me. None of our success would be possible without them.  l am a great believer ln working with the right energies that inspire great ideas, aren’t afraid of hard work, long hours and having the end goal ln sight.

Perfection doesn’t exist

l always say, there is no such thing as perfection, but rather to aim for being the very best ln the world at what you do.  Always be prepared for that twist ln the road, be prepared for that deviation, there ls no such thing as the “perfect plan”.  Be flexible and focused on forward progress. When you are flexible you will be amazed at how much you learn. New ideas and trends crop up every day, allow your creativity and your mind to think big and be open and never allow yourself to be boxed into that “perfect plan.”

“Being an entrepreneur is my dream job, as it tests ones tenacity.” – Gautam Adani

If you could give advice to someone that wants to start their own business, what would it be?

lf you have a great idea and you have created a brand and product that provide a unique solution to a pain point you must have active and aggressive patience, everything takes time. Make sure you are the very best at what you do.  There is no magic, it will not happen overnight, there’s no instant gratification.  You have to have grit and stick. Allow time to do its work. Remain consistent always. Put in the time and eventually things will start happening. When you are making a change you have to expect it to be VERY difficult.  There’s also nothing more important than building your own personal brand because you are unique and can never be cloned.  It is the one competitive advantage you will always have. Yes, you will have to make giant sacrifices in all areas of your life. Yes it will be challenging.  Yes you will have sleepless nights with anxiety and sometimes even feel that you have hit rock bottom. But in spite of all of this NEVER EVER, EVER give up and NEVER EVER EVER doubt yourself.  Malcolm Gladwell popularised the idea that it takes 10 000 hours to master a complex skill. The real key to mastering a complex skill is grit – the ability to stick with something long enough to log those 10 000 hours. Gritty people pick something and stick with it.  They are tenacious, persevering and they absolutely refuse to give up.  They keep a laser focus on their goal and say, “no thanks” to anything that gets in their way.

What is the next step for the Oolala Collection?

We are currently working on maximising and improving the personalization and online shopping experience for our users based on data mining and making sure the entire experience is as seamless as possible.  In addition we are launching our OolalaSWEAT range and collaborating with likeminded brands to drive this campaign hard. (You will have to wait to hear more J).  All in all we are excited for what the future holds.

I believe that the quotes that stick by people are the quotes that tell us more about them. It’s like a little behind the scenes peek at their souls. Daniella chose a beautiful quote from Maya Angelou as her favourite, “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.

When you aren’t working what do you love to do?

I love to be outdoors, running half marathons, boxing or anything fitness related that gives me endorphins.  I am a huge animal lover and love taking Gavi my rescue Western Highland Terrier and Mischa my 12-year-old Labbie out on long beautiful walks and adventures.  Listening to a great podcast, binge watching an awesome series, and of course I’m a pure pamper girl. I could be pampered from head to toe all day, every day.

Who has inspired you and how?

After losing my dad at the age of 12 which was hugely traumatic for my family, my Mom has always taught me the importance of self-independence as she always had that herself.  Always having something to wake up and look forward to each and every day.  My Mom has taught me to believe in myself to never give up, never lose faith and to keep pushing forward tenaciously no matter how tough life can get.

I have a surprise…

The phrase ‘support local’ is a rumbling movement of proud Africans supporting African makers. This change in the attitude of consumers enables budding entrepreneurs to innovate.

A recent introduction to local entrepreneur Daniella Shapiro and the Oolala Collection had me asking, if we are slaves to what we read and see in magazines. We believe that big brands that spend huge amounts on advertising, who is visible and punted by our favourite fashion mags are the ones that will give us the results we want – and we never bother to look at products manufactured right on our doorsteps.

“We don’t need to hide what’s inside”

The Oolala Collection is scientifically formulated and transparent with what’s inside. They believe that safe and healthy products which are gentle on the skin with no parabens also containing the latest in advanced actives and peptides, together with cutting edge formulations stand in a class of their own and cannot be compared to any main stream brands.

They also boast to be 100% animal-friendly and is backed by Beauty Without Cruelty and VeganSA. That means no honey, beeswax, lanolin, fish collagen, carmine, cholesterol, gelatin, squalene and stearic acid or parabens, formaldehyde and triclosan in any of the Oolala Collection products.

What you put on your skin…

When I started with fertility treatments I changed the way I choose products. I opted for more natural products (by that I don’t mean freshly made from roots and leaves) that didn’t have harsh chemicals because I believed that this would influence my chances of succeeding with my treatments.

Whilst speaking to Daniella from the Oolala Collection recently, she shared my belief that chemicals are transferable from your skin to your body’s lymphatic system, putting you at risk of cancer and endocrine disorders.

It is also worth mentioning that they don’t use added packaging other than the product vessel – making this range a “greener” option.

When a product smells ‘pretty’ we sometimes forget to ask if there is more to a product. Well, I finally asked… if Matsimela with its range of relaxing products and heavenly scents is more.

You will be surprised to find out that each of the colours in the Matsimela Home Spa range actually has a purpose – and I’m spilling the beans big time! And btw, this is not sponsored – I’m telling you this for mahala.

Matsimela Home Spa - Beauty Blogger South Africa

Red – Matsimela Red Berry

Did you know that the Red Berry range is meant to help you detox and slim down? The ingredients, which include horse chestnut and natural oils, is absorbed into the skin and helps to break down fat cells!

Pink – Matsiela Litchi & Rose

This is the range you want if you want to look young (almost) forever. The ingredients in the Litchi and Rose Matsimela products stimulate the skin to produce collagen! Did I just surprise you with the best news ever?

Green – Matsimela Ginger & Lime

The Ginger and Lime range is the most popular range from Matsimela during the warmer summer months. Oh and it will help to tone and firm skin (just by the way) – and you can thank the 40 antioxidants in the ginger.

This range also boasts analgesic properties – pain relieve. So next time you have a bruise and have nothing else… try using your Matsimela Ginger and Lime.

Brown – Matsimela Vanilla Sandalwood

If you had a really bad day at work or feel so stressed out that you just can’t deal with it – try Vanilla Sandalwood. This range from Matsimela has soothing/calming chamomile in. If baby is colic… this might also be the answer – just saying.

White – Matsimela Baobab Seed

I have fallen in love with this African tree long before anyone started making beauty products from it… but now I know that it is the most amazing tree in the world.

The Matsimela Baobab Seed range helps with healing scars, rejuvenates skin and has a natural SPF of 4!

You have to be on the lookout for the Matsimela Baobab Seed cuticle oil and massage oil… magic!

More things you didn’t know about Matsimela Home Spa:

  • Their scrubs are made from pure salt harvested from an underground salt lake in the Kalahari. This salt is very heavy, dense and full of natural minerals.
  • They have a muscle gel (for all those lovely injuries) with mint, arnica and eucalyptus that can be used to heal bruises faster, alleviate gout pains (which reminds me, I should get some for my hubby) and lessens joint pains.
  • They also have an Aloe range that is suitable for kids from the age of 10+ with charcoal but free from parabens and petroleum based chemicals.
  • Matsimela sources ingredients ethically, supports upliftment projects and supports local communities.
  • Where possible they try to use organic or natural ingredients.
  • PS… you should also investigate their beauty products. Prices vs results = 2 thumbs up.

What I like about Matsimela Home Spa is that you can buy direct from the people that make it – which makes it good for your pockets.

I have to add a disclaimer, because you can’t just lather up on a bunch of products and expect results. You have to speak to a treatment consultant at one of the spas that use the products to learn what to apply when/where and how – ok?

Winter just creeps into your bones and wreaks havoc on your skin. It’s too cold to go out at night or too early in the morning. For me, it is the most miserable time of the year – except for the extra cuddles from my cats. To get over the winter blues I said yes to a 3 hour day at J’s Revive Wellness Spa… and it was a treat!

Flotation Therapy

First I started off with flotation therapy, which is a “deprivation therapy” that drowns out distractions to soothe anxiety and stress.

I got into this huge round pool filled with salty hot water, surrounded by matchless candles, rolled towels and orchids. Floating on my back with arms and legs stretched out looking up at a dark roof with sparkling lights, whilst listening to music pouring in from hidden speakers.

I could hear nothing else, see nothing else. The water was so warm and cosy and I felt so light just drifting in a space.

At the end of my 30 minutes in the flotation pool I could feel the salt lingering on my skin, forming little crusts. I just felt so amazing…

Massage

I was so relaxed when the therapist led me to the treatment room for a massage. I didn’t think there was any stress left to get rid of, but by the end I was jelly on legs.

From the tip of my toes, arms to my neck she worked on muscles at a medium pressure. The cherry on the top, hot stones… It was as if my day at the spa was specifically designed to get warmth back into my core.

Hair Salon at J’s Revive Wellness Spa

Usually after a day at the spa you leave looking like a wet chicken with oil in your hair – but not at J’s Revive Wellness!

I had salt in my hair and probably a bit of massage oil, but I popped into their hair salon for a wash and blow – and I could’ve probably gone to a meeting straight from that.

Why is this spa so special?

Usually when you go to a spa you can see that they had to work around an existing building’s limitations, but at J’s Revive Wellness Spa the building expands around their needs. They have created a space where you can get a “rounded experience” from holistic to beauty.

If you want to spoil yourself (or someone special) make the trip to this spa near Melrose Arch. It really is one of Joburg’s best kept spa secrets.

Js Revive Wellness Spa in Johannesburg entrance

I’m always amazed at the secrets Jozi hide so well. Last week she revealed a glorious sanctuary in the form of J’s Revive Wellness Spa in Highlands North (across the road from Balfour Mall).

I drove right past the spa, not expecting a dedicated building in a bustling city setting. Finally after parking my car I entered in what can only be described as a quiet sanctuary where wellness and relaxation reside.

Waiting in the reception room I was offered water that carried the aroma of fruit while completing my form. Muted music and running water drowned out the city noise, creating the perfect escape.

J’s Revive Wellness Spa offers every treatment imaginable. There is a hairdresser and sprawling nail bar, luxurious treatment rooms, a pool, gym and cafeteria spread out over 4 floors. This spa blew my mind…

It is bigger than any spa I have visited and still expanding. The treatment rooms weren’t just an afterthought, they were designed with purpose. The lights dim, there is space and you don’t have to waddle from room to room for treatments as everything from a spa bath, massage and facial can be done in one room.

The facialist spoke in soft tones and asked about my recent acne outbreak (yeah, I get those). She stepped out to let me change and get under a towel. My facial lasted forever… it was just so relaxing. There was no feeling of it being rushed or that she needed to be somewhere. While all of this was going on a blue light enveloped the room, enhancing the feeling of being behind a waterfall curtain.

The nail bar… I don’t even know where to start! Having a choice of Morgan Taylor nail lacquers and spa creams, soaps and salts was just a nice touch. When I finally made my choices I got to sit at a nail station where everything was already set up.

Buffing and filing in-between chatting with the two nail technicians for my mani/pedi was a welcome change in my usual quiet work day routine. I could see the ghostly shapes of cars whizzing by from my seat, but they made no sound. I felt so relaxed that I had to take a few minutes after all my treatments before driving back home.
