Ooh la la! It is a well-known fact that Paris is embraced as the world’s city of love. One imagines the city filled with couples walking down the street holding hands or enjoying a scrumptious meal while being serenaded with the romantic sounds of the accordion. With its picturesque views, vibrant arts and culture scene, famous landmarks and delicious food, Paris continues to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. As Valentine’s Day creeps up, here are five reasons why you should surprise your significant other with a trip to Paris during the month of love.

We love because it’s the only true adventure

Valentine’s Day is a big deal in Paris

Much like the Christmas markets bring a festive feel to winter around Europe, Valentine’s Day is an experience in itself in Paris. Restaurants, hotels and other hotspots go all out ensuring you celebrate love in the most romantic way possible. Book a dinner cruise on the Seine, enjoy an unforgettable evening at one of Paris’ most popular cabaret shows or even pop the question under the Eiffel Tower and make this Valentine’s Day one to remember.

It’s easily accessible

Paris is one of the easiest European destinations to reach from South Africa. Air France offers direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Paris. This means that the city of love can be reached by a daily flight from Johannesburg and four times per week from Cape Town. Connections from other cities within South Africa are also available.

We are outside again, walking, when he takes a bite and stops dead. “Wow,” he says after a minute. Then, “Wow,” again.
I smile. Everyone remembers their first taste of Paris. This will be his.

It’s a foodie’s paradise

Food plays a big part in Paris’ romantic setting and if you’re a foodie, a trip to Paris is bound to awaken your senses. From fresh baguettes to French onion soup, perfectly cooked snails and indulging in decadent macarons or flaky croissants, Paris is a destination any culinary fanatic needs to tick off their list. What makes the city even more special is its café culture which promotes romance as diners pair their meals with a fine wine, a beautiful soundtrack and romantic setting.

You can’t blame gravity for falling in love.

Romantic activities are a plenty

Paris seems almost tailormade to create magical moments between you and your loved one with a string of unforgettable activities to raise the romance in your relationship. A trip up the Eiffel Tower gives you the best views of the city while a visit to Disneyland opens up the possibility of exploring your more adventurous side. You can visit the famous Louvre museum and see sculptures and paintings that were inspired by some of the world’s greatest love stories or simplify things by enjoying a pastry while listening to musicians play the accordion on the street or get lost in the city’s Tuileries Garden.

A walk about Paris will provide lessons in history, beauty, and in the point of Lif

Shop up a storm

Coincidentally, Paris is also the fashion capital of the world and many high-end fashion brands have made the city their headquarters. The famous Golden Triangle of Paris, made up of the Champs Elysées, Avenue Georges V and Avenue Montaigne, has an array of stores which harbour the perfect gift options to spoil your loved one. Sabbia Rosa, a boutique full of sensuous and very special lingerie, has become a famous stop for couples looking to celebrate their love and with an array of designer brands, diamond stores and everything in between, this area of the city has your shopping needs sorted.

The shopping, the food, the views! Paris is a city that entrances us all—and I’m no exception.

Get wanderlusting about Paris:

You know when you visit your best friend a few provinces over and she’s been there a (long) while but she doesn’t know where the coolest spots are still? Yeah, that is a thing in my life. I got you tho, because I know…

When in Cape Town you (like the locals) always want a view of the mountain – no matter where you are. Even better if the space you are occupying is high up in the sky and can offer you spectacular views.

Some restaurants try to attain that rooftop vibe by installing floor to ceiling windows to capitalize on views – but… I however prefer breathing in fresh air, feel the wind in my hair. The perfect rooftop venue for me has to offer some shelter from the elements without obstructing the views; be comfortable, but keep it classy and lay on a food, drink and music experience that matches the effortless ‘cool’ of looking down on the bustling city streets.

Now I can tell you about 180 Lounger in the heart of Cape Town. The space atop the 16th floor of The Terraces building on the trendy restaurant strip of Bree Street delivers panoramic views of UNESCO World Heritage Site and official member of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Table Mountain, as well as down towards the Foreshore where luxury cruise liners from around the world pull into the majestic Table Bay harbour.

View from 180 Lounger in the heart of Cape Town

180 Lounger is more than an always-on party hotspot but rather a customizable multi-use event space which offers a pristine location for corporate events, business functions, product launches or private functions and an ‘out-of-the-box’ meeting venue or working facility.

You can find out more about 180 Lounger on www.180lounger.com, facebook.com/180Lounger or on Instagram @180Lounger.

Finding happiness doesn’t have a shortcut. You should be willing to take a chance on the experiences, things and people that will bring happiness.

  1. Happiness cannot be found anywhere else but in yourself
  2. You have to find your freedom and for that you will need to be brave
  3. Rediscover the world through childlike eyes and find the good and beauty in the small things
  4. There is always something to be grateful for, you just need to find it
  5. Find a hobby that makes you happy
  6. Always be yourself
  7. Never step on others to be closer to the sun
  8. Find the balance in your life/work/love…

You continuously need to focus on maintaining your happiness, ensuring that work doesn’t becoming your most important hours within a day.

How to get control over your work/life balance

  • Prioritise your physical, emotional and mental health before that of the office’s demands
  • Unplug – take your lunch hour outside of your office, mute work workplace chat goups
  • Set boundaries and stick to your work hours at the office
  • Plan your holidays at the beginning of the year and book it – you will have something to look forward to all year
  • Make time for yourself – even if you have kids and a husband or partner that also demands your attention
  • Set personal goals just as you need to set professional goals

For your mind

  • This week you can choose between new affirmations
    • I am an exceptional listener. I’m mindful. I’m present.
    • I can listen patiently while others talk – but I also want to be heard.
    • My voice is my power. I deserve to be heard.
  • Set your personal goals for the next 6  or even 12 months

For your body

I know I’ve been hammering on the breathing exercises, but breathing in and out and focusing on it clears your mind.

  • Continue with last week’s breathing exercise:
    • Stretch your arms above your head and put your palms together – be ready, because you will be exhaling next
    • Lower both arms to shoulder height and stretch to either side while exhaling
    • Breathe in while moving your arms back into the stretched position above your head
    • Repeat 20 times
  • Keep on walking while enjoying the scenery

For your soul

  • Create an entry in your Gratitude Journal about the activities you do that makes you happy
  • Plan a trip to a destination you have always wanted to explore and make a plan to book it in the next year

Every morning we ushered Lexa out the front door for school and Lily had a meltdown – why did she have to stay when her sister got to go somewhere?? Like seriously, the world ended every morning dad and big sister walked out the door and down the stairs. Lily even made sure she was the one opening the door and the first one out… but I always scooped her up and kept her at home with me.

My heart beats just a little faster even thinking about leaving the baby with strangers for a day. It wasn’t this hard with Lexa, but she was 6 months older on her first day. Lily is tiny, like a kitten – and what if a bigger kid in her class makes her little temper flare?

I was glad that I wasn’t the one that had to drop her off at school, because I might’ve changed my mind and clung onto her while making a beeline for the door. I’m glad that I was the one that could pick the girls up from school on her very first day with an ice cream in hand for each.

  • Day one pickup Lily was crying because it was all strange. She didn’t know what was happening or why she was there.
  • Day two she didn’t want to leave. She just ran to the playground and refused to be picked up or to move.

Lexa loves it there. She loves the playground, the space, the activities, extramurals and her new friends. I know it is a great opportunity for them. I’m hoping little Lily will make friends and feel at home there too.

Lunch Box Diaries

The girls’ school is fancier than any school I’ve ever attended. They get breakfast and lunch there but we still have to pack healthy snacks every day with a water bottle. What I’ve realised while looking for lunch boxes with dividers (that do not have pieces you can pull out) is that you have to look so carefully at everything from the lid lock mechanism to the plastic and if your very awesome lunchbox will fit into a cooler box. It is a nightmare.

The girls get a yogurt, fruit, a healthy snack like dried berries (Safari Dried Fruits or Montagu) as well as biltong (they LOVE biltong) every day. On Fridays we can pack 1 unhealthy treat.

Time is just flying by and the kids are growing faster than weeds. Plus here I am, trying to spend as much time as possible with them – and somehow fitting in the school things, work and play time.

Last year we reviewed some of the Zimpli Kids Goo which Lexa and her cousin loved. This time around we have new products. I love that Zimpli Kids’ products are a sensory “toy” and that it is environmentally-friendly.

The squeals of delight when they realise its playtime makes the clean-up worthwhile. Obviously both kids tried to eat it too…

Since my oldest is now learning responsibility, she gets to do it all.

  • Pouring the glittery (pre) goo into a bucket
  • Learning to pour the water slowly to not splash the “dust”
  • Mixing it all into a fun goo

Lessons to learn

  • Other small lessons they can learn is about density and liquid – what happens if I just hold it in my hand VS squeezing it
  • Name the colour of the goo
  • Describe the goo

Just some of the Zimpli Kids products

Johannesburg, South Africa, Thursday 30 January 2020: The South African Police Service (SAPS) and Facebook today announced a new partnership to help find missing children by sending Amber Alerts to the Facebook community in South Africa.

The first of its kind in Africa, the Amber Alert system will enable the South African Police Service to seek assistance from the public when it is suspected that a child has been abducted and there is reason to believe there is an immediate and serious risk to the health or welfare of the child. Through Facebook’s Newsfeed, the Amber Alert enables people to instantly share important information about the missing child and suspected abductor, such as a photo, hair colour and clothing with their friends, family and Facebook groups.

Commenting on the launch, Emily Vacher, Facebook’s Director of Trust and Safety, said: “Already available across 23 countries globally, we are proud to partner with the South African Police Service to make Amber Alerts available in South Africa – the first African country to join this programme. When a child is missing, the most valuable thing one can do is share information as quickly as possible. By working with law enforcement in helping to share the right information with the right people, we hope that missing children will be safely reunited with their families faster.”

National Commissioner of the South African Police, General Khehla Sitole said: “Today we are implementing a strong partnership which will assist with SAPS in improving our response time, to enable us to find and safely recover vulnerable missing, abducted or kidnapped children through one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, Facebook.”

How Amber Alerts work

The decision to declare an Amber Alert is made by the South African Police Service when investigating suspected abduction case. Once the South African Police Service has been notified about an abducted child, they must first determine if the case meets their Amber Alert criteria, which includes:

  • The abduction is of a child age 17 or younger;
  • There is a reasonable belief that the child has been abducted
  • The South African Police Service believes the child is in imminent danger of serious bodily harm.
  • There is enough descriptive information about the victim and suspected abduction for law enforcement to issue an Amber Alert to assist in recovering the child

A senior member of the South African Police Service will assess whether these criteria have been met before authorising the Amber Alert. The police service will then notify Facebook’s Global Security Operations Centre, which operates 24/7, that a verified Amber Alert is active. Facebook will then quickly send the alert to the News Feeds of people located in targeted search areas in South Africa.

Emilar Gandhi, Facebook Head of Public Policy, SADC region added: “This is an important step forward in our continued investment and commitment not only to South Africa but across the African continent. The goal of Facebook’s Amber Alerts programme is to instantly galvanize the entire community in the search and recovery of a missing child. Using Facebook enhances the current distribution system by providing all of this information in one place and giving people the ability to share it, wherever they are.”

Amber Alerts will be active as of 30 January 2020.

Your Week 4 Roadmap to a #HappierMeChallenge reading

Listen

This week is all about listening to yourself and being heard by the people in your life. So often we never express our own wants and needs to ourselves, never-mind expressing it to a husband or partner. Or do you have a friend that never listens and always talks?

Listen to yourself, hear and understand what you need. Write it down. Make it happen.

Be Heard

Does your hubby/partner/friend(s) listen to you – or are they always talking? Can you remember the conversations – because they’ve been repeated so many times already? Can your hubby/partner/friend/friend do the same for you? Do you have the opportunity to speak during conversations?

Speak up and let them know that you also need to talk/share… or go back and read week 2s challenge again.

For your mind

  • This week you can choose between new affirmations
    • I am an exceptional listener. I’m mindful. I’m present.
    • I can listen patiently while others talk – but I also want to be heard.
    • My voice is my power. I deserve to be heard.
  • How is your reading or course going?

For your body

  • Your new breathing exercise:
    • Stretch your arms above your head and put your palms together – be ready, because you will be exhaling next
    • Lower both arms to shoulder height and stretch to either side while exhaling
    • Breathe in while moving your arms back into the stretched position above your head
    • Repeat 20 times
  • Keep on walking while enjoying the scenery

For your soul

  • Create an entry in your Gratitude Journal about the people closest to you – and what they mean to you
  • Work on being vocal on what you need and want from those around you

If you’ve missed the beginning of the Roadmap to a Happier Me Challenge you can find all the articles here:

I feel the good vibes after week 2 of my Roadmap to a #HappierMeChallenge. In the past 2 weeks I have done my breathing exercises, paid compliments and enjoyed the smiles of strangers, I even shared a slice of watermelon with 2 strangers on their lunch break outside of Northgate Mall.

The Watermelon incident

I had a great day before stopping at the mall. I had just came from Amazing K autism school where they were blessed to have received a huge donation from Puma Energy. (You can read all about it on their Facebook page.) I felt good. I had a smile on my face – and that is when a complete stranger called me over and offered a slice. The old me would’ve just said no thanks and moved on, but there I was eating a sweet slice of watermelon with 2 strangers on the step of the mall. The universe truly returns good vibes when you put them out there too.

Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.

Zig Ziglar

Start part 3 of your weekly Roadmap to a #HappierMeChallenge

This week is all about acknowledging the good people in your life, the friends that stand by you, the things that you love – but most importantly I want you to appreciate yourself.

Here is your “homework” for this week:

  • Tell the people closest to you just how much they mean to you. Say I love you to your significant other.
  • Show your appreciation to yourself and go for a coffee date or meal with yourself.
  • Be grateful for all that you have – from the shoes in your closet to the photos you have of great times spent together.

For your mind

  • How is your online course going? Have you finished a few modules?
  • Did you opt for a book and read a few pages?
  • Choose an new affirmation and repeat to yourself whenever you remember or have a moment to yourself
    • I choose to be thankful no matter my circumstances.
    • I am grateful for my health, prosperity and love.
    • I am blessed.
    • I am grateful for everything I have, the people that love me and will leave my door open for more good.

For your body

  • Increase your walking to 20 minutes a day
  • Keep up the simple breathing exercise in your daily routine – do 50 a day
Stretch your arms in front of you and place your palms on top of each other – inhale. Now let go by moving your left arm to the left until it is in line with your body – let your right hand run down your arm. Now breathe in and center your arms again. Repeat to your right

For your soul

  • Create a list of all the things that you are grateful for
  • Start a creative Gratitude Journal and illustrate each of these things/people/thoughts – let your Gratitude Journal grow and evolve as you get more comfortable with penning your thoughts

You may want to go to the beginning of this self-care challenge:

I really feel gratitude every day in my life that I’m able to do what I love, and I think, because I have that passion and spirit, I’ve had success.

Christen Press

I hope that you connected to a stranger by paying a compliment last week – how did it feel when they smiled and thanked you? Do you think you banked enough good karma to get you through 2020 – or do you think you’d like to continue banking good karma?

Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling.

Margaret Lee Runbeck

Week 2’s challenge is about letting go of toxic relationships or anger and to mend relationships.

  • Your most important soul homework is to forgive yourself for any bad decisions you may have made – write yourself a letter or email and stash it away until this challenge tells you to read it again
  • Create a list of all the people you want to rebuild relationships with and those that you need to let go of – write down a reason for each and how you will be dealing with each person

For your body

  • Your body has probably thanked you by now for getting it to move and deserves a treat. Take an hour this week for self-care and get a manicure/pedicure/haircut/massage
  • Keep up the 10 minute walking
  • Add a simple breathing exercise into your daily routine – do 20 a day
Stretch your arms in front of you and place your palms on top of each other – inhale. Now let go by moving your left arm to the left until it is in line with your body – let your right hand run down your arm. Now breathe in and center your arms again. Repeat to your right

For your mind

  • Start your course or DIY learning this week. Set yourself an attainable goal of completing x number of chapters/parts.
  • Choose an affirmation and repeat to yourself whenever you remember or have a moment to yourself
    • I choose to be happy, healthy and whole
    • I embrace the parts of me that need love the most
    • I am a priority in my life
