Our day of 2023 started with a hike!

The little one is a trooper who just marches up and down hills like she’s done it all her life whilst the oldest needs ‘some’ encouragement.

We walked 1.2km and the kids had to carry their own water and snacks.

2020 to 2022 was not a (few) good year (s) for my weight – and yes I am lumping them all together, because quite frankly, they sucked. I managed to gain 20kgs. I do not fit into any of my beloved jeans and have a double chin. I hate it enough to start getting back to myself this year.

I can still remember the days of slipping into a size 34. It was heavenly. I was even happy as a size 36. I felt wonderful in my 36’s. I felt confident and skinny.

Then somewhere between my (now) husband moving in and getting married I started to really gain weight. I gained 15kg and then my whole infertility nonsense started and I gained another 10kg. I was weighing in on 96kg. A whale.

I actually could not stand looking at myself anymore. It was just a horrific tragedy looking more like a shape than the curvy person I once was. To top everything off this year I have had bronchitis and flu for a total of 10 weeks so there was no way in this world that I could exercise.

Soup diet for weightlossI wasn’t ready to do another fad diet where I starved and craved everything. I buckled up and made soup for lunch for most of the winter. Obviously I cheated quite a bit with snacks as when I’m sick I am the most pitiful creature you would ever meet.

Today I am 7kg lighter and down to 89kg. I would love to reach 85kg this year so I am going to soup it up for the rest of winter.

The soup

My “diet soup” is nothing special. A packet of pre-cut soup mix from Pick n Pay, add some barley and boil until soft. Then mush it all up. Add a little salt, but no soup powder. That is it. Healthy as only vegetables with no preservatives can be.

Since 2014 was such a hard year where I retreated from the world I also neglected to go out to exercise. For 2015 I will do at least 1 walking race per month and go to gym 3 times per week.

My weight gain this past year only hit me a few weeks ago and I seriously disgust myself.

Will you be joining me on a journey to live healthier and drop a bit of weight? Let me know what your plans are.

I somehow suspect I will not die if I eat more salad leaves. I do however love my strawberry smoothies – but dislike green tea quite a bit.

I have been quiet for some time now and it is mostly because  I veered off the diet road.

Yesterday and today’s menu:

Breakfast
Strawberry smoothie with water, peanut butter, honey and coconut milk
Snack
Cup of cucumber slices and a cup of green tea
Lunch
Salad with leaves, tomato and a fish fillet/piece of chicken
Snack
10 x asparagus sticks oven-baked with salt, pepper and garlic and a cup of green tea
Dinner
Microwaved vegetables with a piece of chicken/fish fillet
Water
3 x 500ml

I have really been struggling to not snack the last week, but I have now gotten my husband and friend at work to diet with me – hence, new menu. I can now say that I dislike asparagus and green tea.

Also, I had a severe bloated stomach for most of the night. Dare I say it… I think my colon is now cleansed too.

I cheated today with a big fat slab of chocolate. I deserve it after the sit-ups I did last night. At 14:39, I am not yet hungry or looking to run downstairs and buy a croissant.

Breakfast
1/2 can of baked beans and 8 Fish-fingers
Lunch
Snack
Slab of chocolate
Water
3 x 500ml at work
Dinner
Water
500ml

So, I cheated last night with a Tinkie and went for a 30 minute walk. This morning, I am down to 86kg. I am not starving. Tonight I will be going to gym for 30 minutes.

I am off to Mozambique in January and I definitely do not want to look like a beached whale.

Breakfast
1/2 can of baked beans
Lunch
Fish
Snack
Yogurt, microwaved apple (with cinnamon and a bit of sugar)
Water
3 x 500ml at work
Dinner
Chicken nuggets (7) some oven-bake veggies
Water
500ml

I have not yet went off on a binge for sweets or bread. (It is damn hard saying no to myself – I have such a charming way of asking you know.)

We went to gym last night and only did 30 minutes, but it was a solid workout. It was nice being back, but it will be hard work to get back into routine and make the effort to go.

Today my meals consisted of the following:

Breakfast Microwaved apple (with cinnamon and a bit of sugar); half a grapefruit; Salticrax with cream cheese
Lunch Fishwith 1 corn on cob
Snack Tinkie
Water 1 x 500ml at work
Dinner 1/2 Kauai wrap
Water 500ml

This week, I have started yet another diet and gym effort. I am so over being a big fat blob. This year I have tried gym and eating healthy. I even paid a personal trainer for 3 months – which resulted in me having to recover from a severe neck injury and gaining 6kgs (thanks for nothing dude). I also had healthy meals delivered that were “geared at weight loss” – gained 1kg on that.

Now I am back at relying on myself to shed the weight I gained while trying to do everything right. I am not going to take any pills to help (like my friend did), not going to pay someone to “train” me or to deliver “healthy foods” to my door or rely on my friends to support me.

I lost more weight when I was following my own gym routine and eating what I liked in moderation (and that included my crisps).

Today my meals consisted of the following:

Breakfast Yogurt and rye vita with cream cheese
Lunch Fish with microwaved apple (with cinnamon and a bit of sugar) and half a grapefruit
Snack 30g crisps
Water 3 x 500ml at work
Dinner Chicken burger on a health bun with chips
Water 1 x 450ml

Saturday morning I woke up and weighed myself. It was the worst moment of my life, seeing that I weighed as much as an elephant – I know, I am exaggerating.

I hit rock bottom and an all-time weight high. I couldn’t make myself get out of bed the rest of the day. I didn’t eat for almost 24 hours. I thought to myself that if I could stay depressed, I would drop the weight quicker. There was even a fleeting moment of considering liposuction, but the thought of risking unsightly uneven skin was too much to bear.

By Sunday I felt better. In my 24 hours of depression I had lost 1kg. Yes, that 1kg might just be water and not last, but 1kg is better than nothing.

I ate a cheese sandwich for breakfast and left the house to buy food.

By the afternoon I was so hungry and fed-up with drinking water. I craved real food – and lots of it – with potatoes and sauce. I gave in and let myself have a side plate filled with food.
Later that night I craved anything and everything and was literally starving. Instead of giving in, I ate crackers and cream cheese.
